The coins of France have a charm of their own and carry the different French symbols of state such as Marianne, Le coq Gaulois, aka Gallic Rooster, and Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

Marianne stands for freedom. All around France, public buildings are home to images, busts, and statues of her.

The Gallic Rooster came to symbolize fraternity, which is the third component of France's tripartite motto.

Liberty, Equality, Fraternity is the French motto that surpasses all mottos. It embodies the principles of a resurrected nation

The obverse of the coin depicts Marianne as the sower.

The image that most people are likely most familiar with of Marianne is probably la seumeuse, or "the sower," a 19th-century design that depicts Marianne as the one planting the seeds that will eventually bring about prosperity and peace.

In a fitting way, this design has been widely used on all types of common coins from the francs of the 1960s all the way to today’s euros. While it is true that the French state has made an extensive use of the figure of Marianne and even included her in their official logo, in practice, Marianne cannot be limited to a mere allegory of a form of government. ¹
