Diamond in the rough…

Afternoon everyone …..

I’m taking a break today from my twelve days of Christmas posts for something that I thought was more interesting and more important.

I had a really crazy day on a job site. I was replacing a large sliding glass door for a customer. This is not work that I typically will sign, but it was for a very good customer of mine. They asked and I said yes.

When they say “I want it done the right way”. How can you say no.

One of the reasons that I don’t like doing exterior doors is that you never know what you will find once you take the old one out. In this case it was some water damage, and three floor joists cut down for no reason.

Well….

I obviously wasn’t leaving it that way. I had a helper when I delivered the door getting it out of my truck and up onto the deck where it was going. Good thing, the door weighs about 350-400 pounds. But my window on having his assistance yesterday closed before I was ready to put the new one in. So I somehow got it in by myself.

When I got home, I was done with everything for the day, I was shot. Which leads me to my post today.

I said let me see what’s on auction….

I started on eBay, and my first search brought up this vintage silver round. The seller obviously did not know what he had or the price would’ve reflected it. I immediately sent and offer which was accepted.

The round is from 1974 and was produced by the Tri State Mint. There were two versions of this round produced. One with the Tri State Mint logo on the back. Which are also pretty scarce at less than 500 produced.

But they also made a trade dollar backed one. Which less than 100 were produced. Which is what was for sale.

The regular backed ones typically sell for between $120-$200. But these trade dollar back ones don’t come up often enough to get a true sale price on them. The last completed auction sale that I could find was from nine months ago and the round sold for $311.

I paid less than $100 for this Diamond in the rough.

It’s a 1974 Dragon trade dollar round.

I don’t have it in hand yet, but here are the pictures on it from its listing.
