Custom desk unit built into and under a staircase….

I thought I’d share a job that I just completed yesterday. A few weeks back, I was called by a neighbor of someone I had done work for recently.

Underneath their staircase was dead space. It was framed out and drywalled to be equal with the outside of the stairs. Typically they make a closet out of this space. But for some reason whomever owned the house just framed it and drywalled it leaving dead space that you couldn’t access.

They wanted to turn it into a workstation with a desk. I had drawn up a few different rough designs and they chose one.

Before finalizing the actual dimensions, I first had to remove all the framing and drywall. Since the walls inside had no drywall, I needed to put some up to finish the walls first.

I made a few templates and told them I’d contact them once I was ready for install.

They chose a white lacquered finish over solid maple wood. The desktop was made from solid waterfalled mahogany.

The way I designed it, there were two spring releases drawers under the lower stairs, then a bookcase with desk unit below with a file drawer.
