I learned, as a manager, to not take things at face value. One employee will tell you one thing. Another employee will tell you another version. And the records show something else. It is damaging to your authority to jump to conclusions with only partial knowledge.

Thanks for sharing this. So do you mean I can have the assumptions but I shouldn't spill them out until I have facts?
In my experience, first impressions are often, not always, wrong. You must still deal with the situation. But deal with it with the assumption you don't know the whole story.
Often, what I think and what I can prove are completely different things.
