Mariefred Marvels | Trekking through Kalkbro's Limestone Wonders
We took Road 55 between Strängnäs and Flen to get there. About 1.5 km south of Länna Bruk we took an exit, going by signs that said "Naturreservat" and "Kalkbro 5". We reached the parking lot after travelling five km on a dusty road.
We turned around after initially attempting to approach Kalkbro from a different direction. Walking was an option but we were hesitant because of the deep forest, lack of planning and lack of internet access. We also chose to head back to town because our car was running low on fuel.
We stopped in town to refuel, picked up some water and fruit and then drove back to Kalkbro. Surprisingly, this time we found the parking area where the limestone quarry is about 20 metres ahead.
We were excited about exploring the limestone cliffs, we were all set to hike into the forest and see the wonders of Kalkbro.
At Kalkbro, we explored an ancient limestone quarry enclosed by towering walls. For centuries, it was a bustling spot for lime extraction until the 1940s when it was left abandoned. Surrounded by calcareous soil, this place nurtures an array of uncommon flowers, fungi and mosses, creating a truly unique environment.
This location had a special place in a famous Swedish children's story written by an acclaimed author Astrid Lindgren. It even inspired a film! @saif-ul-wahab animatedly recounted this tale to us, bringing the place alive with his words.
The day was truly remarkable. We captured the beauty of the quarry in photos because sometimes, pictures speak louder than words. Each snapshot tells a story of its own, preserving the magic of this enchanting place. As the sun began to set we bid adieu to Kalkbro, carrying with us memories captured in pixels and in our hearts.
