The Quilted Journey: From Fabric to Destiny

The word “quilt” comes from the Latin “culcita” meaning a stuffed sack. Interesting root for a word that is anything but stuffed sacks. Although, sacking has been used to create them over the years, quilts are one of the tapestries used to tell stories and commemorate events while providing warm cover in cold climates.

When Canada celebrated it’s 150th our local quilters group put out a call for hand stitched quilts to create a display with. I spent about an hour exploring through the display. Some of the quilts on display were almost as old as the country we were celebrating.

As I stood viewing each quilt, they told stories of family and community events. Each one carefully designed, laid out and stitched either by individuals or quilting circles where ladies would come together to visit as they worked on creating quilts. I could almost sense the love and patience each one of the quilts held within the padded fabric and stitches.

The tapestry of our life is a quilt that starts to take form the moment we’re born. It’s a complex interweave of experiences, relationships and events creating a unique pattern for each person.

The fabric is a labour of love, the stitching is what holds us together as we make our way through life. The thread is cut by scissors of our choices. Our decisions define the contours of our life, the depth of the padding.

Our life quilt isn’t stitched by a quilting circle, it’s a collaboration between ourself and the Universe. Between our free will and the destiny we were created to reach. It’s a sacred legacy capturing our earthly journey, stitched together with the divine thread of love.
