Sorting Out Female Cat Facts
Last week on #caturday Hobo managed to get onto the keyboard and wrote one of her diatribes to me. She loves doing that venting and I never know what she’s going to come out next.
In case you didn’t notice, the header image on this post was just taken of Hobo trying to insert herself into this post. Guess she’s afraid I’m going to write a rebuttal.
Something that came up in the comments on the post was her reference to Queen. First, the comment about the lady on the balcony not being the Queen, that Hobo is my Queen. It was a reference to Queen Elizabeth who appears on the balcony at Buckingham Palace during special events like the recent Jubilee. She’d been laying here as I watched the events.
Names for Female Cats - Molly, Queen & Dam
Any female cat can be called a Molly. It’s the female cat version of tomcat. The origin of the term is unknown.
A female cat of breeding age, is pregnant or has had kittens is called a Queen. When a pregnant female cat is having her kittens, she’s Queening which is where the term Queen came from. Hobo is of breeding age so she is a Queen.
The term Queen is apt among groups of domestic cats you’ll find they generally have a matriarchal social structure with a female in charge.
The term Dam for a female cat is more specialized. It refers to the rare or purebred female cat. The term is used for recording the cat breeding records.
Cats Can Deliver a Litter With Multiple Fathers
Ever wonder how the kittens in a litter can have such a range of colour and markings? I’ve always thought it was in the parent’s genes like humans get characteristics from both parents.
Queens can mate with multiple male cats when producing a litter and more than one of the males can father kittens within a litter.
Are They Righties or Lefties?
Studies have shown female cats tend to lead with their right paw while males will lead with their left. When I thought about my two females here when they reach for something, they do usually use their right paw.
Tortoiseshell Cats Are Usually Females
I have always loved the look of calico cats. They look like multicoloured patchs. Calicos are almost always female. A male will usually be sterile.
A tortoiseshell (or torti) cat is often referred to as an ‘unfinished calico’. Their colours are usually mixed but not in the defined way a calico cat is. Like a calico, a torti will also usually be a female.
Hobo’s household buddy, Tramp is a Torti. Here she is here:
Hobo gave up trying to get at the keyboard and has curled up beside me to go to sleep.

aw, I love your cats! Hobo certainly wasn't going to entertain you doing any more work without giving attention where attention was due !LOLZ So I take it that Tramp leads with her right then? I have 3 cats... one girl and two boys. Lily (funnily enough originally called Tiger-Lily but shortened for ease) is 12 years old. Before I got her, I had lost my ginger baby to cancer and he was only 12 at the time. I had a dream that I would get another cat and that is would be a tiger cat called Baby... I ended up being gifted a pair of kittens for my birthday that same year and called them Tiger-Lily and Bailey (as a sort of compromise from my dream 😉 ). Bailey sadly died at 6 months old. During the recent lock down we acquired 2 male kittens: Brady and Jules (a nod to Tom and Julian a la N.E. Patriots)... my Lily was not a fan... still struggles sometimes and it has been 2 years haha. But she leads with a double smack to the head when she's feeling feisty haha. I need to record her and watch it in slo-mo to understand her technique... she has those boys under control though, albeit she is half their size! !PIZZA !ALIVE
both cats lead with their right... been watching a bit more since I wrote the post.
I usually try to keep my cat companions to no more than 2 at a time. Although when Hobo arrived she took it up to 3 which sadly was then reduced to just her within the next year. That is what prompted Tramp coming in. Hobo was very unhappy being the lone cat.
With the matriarchal nature of cats in community, it's not surprising that Lily is firmly in command of the boys. I do recall Dawn being firmly in control with Fawnya. At the time I thought it was a seniority thing. When I brought him into the house she spent the first few days cuffing him around. He ran to me at one point and snuggled in beside me with Dawn swatting at his butt. It was rather funny to watch.
hehe is it quite difficult resist the urge to chuckle at the antics, although we do have to go to their rescue at times... she can get quite snotty with them but Brady is getting a bit pushy around her food so I get her complaints 🤣 I'll have to watch her next time she decides to get some ring action in and see how she leads... !PIZZA !ALIVE

This is the finest bit of prose you've ever written, Shadows. It's my fave topic so you couldn't go wrong.
I've been a bit down in the dumps the last couple of weeks and the depression gave me some troubles sorting out my log in errors. This morning I spent some time and the cogno finally kicked in so that I could arrive into my account.
Imagine the joy I felt when I came back tonight to discover the stars of the ShadowPub had recently posted and included two new selfies of themselves!! What joy!!
I didn't know the term Molly, I did know how to use the term Queen, but I didn't know the term Dam. Our Tuxxie Momo is a Molly and BabyBoo, the Korat is most definitely a Dam.
I love the variety of the things you post. You are never, ever boring!
Thank you for training me as I slowly become more a part of the community. 💖
thank you for your kind words about my posts ... I bet you would not be boring either ... just need to see more posts to know. No pressure eh
We have always referred to Baby Boo as "that dam cat" not knowing we were being technically correct! Great post, love me some good cat facts.
Why do I get the sense that you were misspelling 'dam' and adding an N in there?
