You might shrink

Many people are eager to apply for opportunities they really don't prepare for and some opportunities comes by chance. Whether by chance or by application, we must learn to prepare for greater height. Its on this premise I will be sharing a discussion I had with my coach recently. We were discussing on my plans for the future and I told him I wish to further my academics outside Nigeria but before I do I want to learn a skill. He asked why I needed to learn a skill and I responded that I needed it to leverage in my academics and also make money while studying. Then he looked at me with such a sad expression which geared my curiosity towards asking him what the problem was and he started narrating how his friend abroad has been suffering and couldn't bear the shame of coming back to Nigeria.

This friend of his left Nigeria two years ago and has been living a low life in America. What happened? was my question. He went further to tell me how this man just coincidentally got sponsorship for a work visa through the help of someone. He wasn't even expecting a positive response and when his visa was granted he went with nothing. Not that he went without clothes but he went with nothing that can secure him a good job. This is someone who bought his way through school and now opportunity comes he couldn't stand. He is holding a certificate he couldn't defend.
He attended series of interviews but failed and he didn't learn any skill so he was just useless to them over there. I know many Nigerian are looking for opportunities to leave the country but are not prepared for it. Many forget that it is your skills and expertise that will open door of greatness over there.

You have drafted a wonderful CV about yourself which include many skills you don't have just to apply for a particular job. Prepare for the future you want to see don't wait till when opportunities comes before you start learning how to navigate your ways. Let opportunities meet you prepared. If you dream of becoming the minister of finance start learning financial management now, if you want to become a pastor then attend a pastorial school. I am someone that believes in dream actualization, I believe your dream will soon become a reality but you must work towards it.
