Light in the Darkness

(Edited)

He walked down the wet city streets and let his feet take him somewhere. Carnival lights twinkled around him and called him to run. But with each step, he felt himself slipping further away from his soul, into a dark, bottomless well.

He used to call this city home. Every corner, every cranny, offered a comfort that had become foreign. The familiar streets were foreign and unfamiliar, people flowing around him as if he were a ghost. He seemed to blend in with them, like a shadow.

He was soaked from the drizzle, which had soaked his old jacket. His feet splashed in the puddles at his feet, a rhythm that matched the thoughts racing through his head. “What am I really looking for?” he asked himself. It settled like a dark cloud over his heart.

A picture of a woman’s face floated into his mind. “What happened to us?” he said, thinking of her radiant smile and her infectious laugh. All of it slowly faded, victims of the crushing weight of time.

He stopped under a lit streetlight, staring up at the dark, empty sky. The weight of being a loser was on his chest. He couldn’t seem to get away from it, but there was nowhere to go. There was nothing but darkness as far as the eye could see.

Then, suddenly, his phone vibrated in his pocket. A text message came in: “Are you okay?” The simple question reminded him of someone who had always been by his side. Malcolm read the message over and over again, unsure of what to say. The words felt heavy on his tongue.

How was he going to convey the emptiness that was eating away at his heart? Could he say he was okay when there was no warmth around him, and no one to hold onto in his life? He sighed, and put his phone back in his pocket, his heart still pounding as he walked.

His feet carried him to a small bridge. Beneath it, a river flowed slowly, washing away everything he no longer needed. He stared at the river’s current, contemplating his life, filled with burdens. Maybe it was time to let go of something that was tied to him.

A saying rang in his ears: “What you seek is within you.” Before, it had sounded like nonsense. But now, at night, he began to understand its meaning. It was more than a search for the outside world; it was an inner search for who he really was.

Around the corner, Malcolm saw a small tea shop. He went in, ordered a warm herbal tea, and sat in the corner. Outside, the rain was getting heavier and its sound was sweeping away the dust from the street. Inside the shop, he finally felt a blanket of peace envelop him for the first time in years.

He held the cup of tea, warm in his hands, as he thought about his life. He had been searching for acceptance and love out there. But maybe what he needed was to make peace with himself. This realization brought a spark of hope to his heart.

The rain had stopped as he left the shop. The wet sidewalk shone with the light from the lamps, making them look like stars on the ground. He took a deep breath, and a new fire coursed through his veins. Tonight, it was as if there was nothing to guide him but the light.

He stepped more steadily. The answer might not be out there, but within. He finally realized that he didn’t have to run anymore. The light he had been searching for his whole life was waiting to be seen, hidden in the darkness that surrounded him.

He was no longer afraid of the darkness. He began to embrace it and understand that hope lurked in the shadows of everything. He walked from that place with a newfound self-esteem, ready to face what the future held. He had searched outside for too long; now he had to search inside.

Malcolm had a new fire inside him. He knew there was more to come, but he felt lighter. What he was looking for would not be easy to find, but he was willing to search. He would find the light in the darkness that had become his goal.

Malcolm really convinced himself this time!

The words felt heavy on his tongue.

I can relate to this feeling. You literally have a lot to say but you just feel like you don't have the words to convey your thoughts perfectly as they are.

Indeed, sometimes in life, we look the wrong way... The answer we were earnestly looking for might just be around us or within us but we literally spend time going in circles.

It was a great story and of course the music made it a perfect one... Was great reading from you
