ThreeTuneTuesday: ExYU Rock 3 (Supergroups)
Hello music lovers! 🎵
My 15th post for #threetunetuesday, started by @ablaze, and I'll continue with a story about rock music in former Yugoslavia, a country between East and West, which ended in agony, violence, and blood.
If you're interested, you can read the first post here, and second here.
The 1980s were a golden age for Yugoslav rock music. The bands of those times were really stars in the true sense of the word and are still popular throughout the territory of the former country. Most people in the region aged between 40 and 60 have nostalgia for those times, and the music from that time is a beautiful memory that, in the end, also covers up everything that was bad in the former country, and there was a lot of it.
I am not going to discuss that here and now, let us leave it for another occasion and go back to the music.
Some bands no longer exist, and some bands are re-forming, of course, now it's all about money, you have to fight and survive, whereas life used to be more leisurely. For some, of course.
As I always say, this is my view and I choose the bands that have filled my time and that I have followed, anyone who thinks I have forgotten something is free to comment.
Bijelo Dugme
Bijelo Dugme (translation White Button) was undoubtedly the most popular and influential band in those days. The band's history is very well documented so I wouldn't go on about it. Basically, they were formed from the band Jutro (Morning) in 1974 when vocalist Željko Bebek invited Goran Bregović, guitarist, to join. Later, in the 90s, Goran Bregovic became a very well-known composer of film music, mainly in collaboration with director Emir Kusturica, e.g. he wrote the music for the quite successful movie Arizona Dream.
This song Ako možeš, zaboravi (If you can, forget it) is from 1983 from album "Uspavanka za Radmilu M" (Lullaby for Radmila M.).

Ekaterina Velika
Personally, I like this band the best from the former country. Modern and fresh rock still when I listen to them (and the only nostalgia for the former country). I saw them many times in Belgrade and elsewhere, so I feel somehow connected to them. Sometimes it's very hard for me to listen to them because they remind me of my youth and times that will never be again. :(
They were made in Belgrade in 1982, during the post-punk and new-wave era. They were unlucky, unfortunately. Their activities ended in 1994 when frontman Miloslav Mladenovic died of cancer at the age of 34. The last original member of the band Margita Stefanovic, a keyboard player who also wrote a lot of music for films, died in 2002 at the age of 43, she was an heroin addict, it was not an overdose but HIV.
This song, "Ti si sav moj bol" (in translation You're all my pain) is from the album "S vjetrom u lice" (With the wind on your cheek) from 1986.

Parni Valjak
Parni Valjak (in translation Steam Roller) is a band formed in Zagreb in 1975. Their sound went from hard rock in the 80s to the mainstream and they are still successfully navigating it now. It's not quite clear if they'll continue, as singer Aki Rahimovski recently passed away a year ago.
I mention them mainly because they are (were) still the only superstars who have performed consistently throughout the whole time since their formation, and quite a few of their songs have become evergreens. Every concert is a big event and they attract tens of thousands of people.
The song "Moja je pjesma lagana" in translation "My song is light" is from 1988 from the album Sjaj u očima (Shine in Eyes). The video is from a concert in the amphitheater in Pula in 2017, attended by over 20,000 people.

As always, there must be a little bonus :)
Leb i Sol
Leb i Sol (in translation Bread and Salt) is a band from Skopje, Macedonia (now North Macedonia), founded in 1975 by guitarist Vlatko Stefanovski. Although they didn't sell many records in the beginning, they have always been mentioned as an extraordinary jazz-rock band, combining jazz with folkloric Macedonian elements and highly appreciated in urban centers, and Vlatko Stefanovski later, in his solo career, collaborated with many eminent international jazz musicians and certainly deserves to be called a guitar virtuoso and to be ranked among all the world's great guitarists.
This recording was made in 1989, in Belgrade, and shows all the virtuosity of the band. But it's from their first album Leb i Sol from 1977. It's an arrangement of an old Macedonian folk song.
Go ahead and listen, I'm sure you've probably never heard anything like it before. :)

Riblja Čorba
Riblja Čorba (in translation Fish Stew), is a rock band from Belgrade, Serbia, funded in 1978 by singer Bora Đorđevič. Rock'n'roll and later hard rock style with their catchy melodies and provocative lyrics, they quickly rose to the top of popularity in the 1980s, and were accepted as a rock attraction everywhere, in urban centres and elsewhere.
The singer Bora Đorđević still performs now, but with a different band and no longer has the visibility he once had, mainly because in the 1990s, during the bloody war, he publicly advocated and performed for one side.
This song, Ostaču slobodan (in translation I will remain free) is from 1981, from album Pokvarena mašta i prljave strasti (Corrupt fantasies and dirty passions).

Believe it or not, I have a lot more to add, but I will next time. :)

Five tunes this week! These were all pretty great, too. It's always fun to listen to music from around the world.
Yes, in fact, it's hard for me to choose only three :)
It is always fun to see your contributions to #ttt

Welfone man for the great devotion
You rock!
Thank you very much. Will be more :)
You are welcome
I usually enjoy the beats and the way they play their guitars. It always fascinates me.
They fascinating me, too :)
Azra:
Haustor:
Divlje Jagode:
It really is a very good selection from that period of time. So it is not surprising that many of these musicians are still active and very successful today.
Sadly, death has also taken some of us from the stage far too early. Aki Rahimovsk, for example, who died quite unexpectedly last year.
Hence the last song for Aki. Parni Valjak for the first time without Aki Rahimovsk.
Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, I see you know the case, well for one of them, especially Azra and a few others, they are coming in the next posts - the new wave. 😎
We are really getting spoilt with your in depth knowledge of former Yugoslavia's music scene, five more quality tunes this week for us and a great history and a back story to go with each as well. I especially liked Riblja Čorba and Ekaterina Velika - Ti si sav moj bol. Foot tapping along listening to these.
