New Tunes 18.8.2023
Hello music lovers! 🎵
What's going on? Concerts, open-air festivals, anything going on where you are? There's a lot going on, but I can't be everywhere.
Still, we're watching for new music, so here's another #newtunes selection for the weekend and beyond.
Again, I have a selection of new music, mostly from lesser-known musicians and debut artists, that is just now reaching listeners and streaming platforms. We'll see what catches on and what doesn't.
And if you don't like something, just skip it, as usual.

King Krule - Hamburgerphobia
King Krule aka Archy Marshall is a rising rock star from London. He can definitely be counted on for a dose of melancholy, giving us a mix of rock, jazz, hip-hop, and deep vocals to explain his feelings.
Space Heavy is his third album and despite flirting with superstar status, it is clear that he is not overly concerned with the increased attention from the public and music critics, but continues on his melancholic path.
SANAM - Mouathibatti معذبتي
SANAM, a six-piece band from the chaotic Lebanese city of Beirut, is a new name to me. They formed a few years ago, but before that, the musicians were involved in other Beirut bands like Kinematik or the dream-pop Postcards.
In addition to drums, bass, guitars, synthesizers, and various electronics, the musicians serve us the sounds of the bouzouki, which is a kind of lute.
From the debut album Aykathani Malakon, I chose a more psychedelic track with a colorful, sharp, and also dreamy rhythmic atmosphere led by singer Sandy Chamoun. I recommend it.
Gina Birch - Wish I Was You
Gina Birch is a British musician and video artist, best known musically for her work with the post-punk band The Raincoats. Although she has been on the music scene for forty years, she released her first solo album I Play My Bass Loud this February.
The album is very musically diverse and shows all aspects of her long career.
I chose the song Wish I Was You because it reminds me a little of the sound and atmosphere that Patty Smith makes.
MISS ESPAÑA - Marte Rojo
Miss España is a Spanish trio from Madrid who, in their own words, have the answer to the boring life of a sleazebag and make new wave synth punk music. They also share feelings of hate and love, and pain alleviated by tryptizol, an antidepressant used to treat depression and mental health problems.
This year they released their debut album Niebla Mental, translated as Brain Fog.
Marte Rojo is the first single from this album, in which it is already difficult to find a parallel with our world, the whole thing is more reminiscent of Mars from unwanted, obscene dreams or nightmares.
bdrmm - Be Careful
bdrmm (short for Bedroom) is a newer English band firmly rooted in the new wave of shoegaze and guitar pop. They have recently released their second album I Don't Know, in which you can hear influences from a wide range of genres from krautrock, noise, psychedelic and electronic influences from contemporary rock.
Regardless of all the other influences mentioned, the music is based on melodic guitar riffs and dreamy lyrics, where there is always a sense of uncertainty and a sense of being lost in life, somewhere between resignation and a helpless search for a lifeline.
No, they certainly won't save the world, but at least they tried and it sounds very elegant.
Blue Lake - Bloom
Blue Lake is a new name for me and it's signed Jason Dungan from Copenhagen, who creates unique instrumental sounds, a kind of blend of acoustic folk and jazz with a multitude of different instruments from slide guitars, drones, clarinets and electronic drums. He recently released Sun Arcs, his fifth album, and says he was inspired by summer walks in the Swedish forests. The music is surprisingly full and meditatively balanced for me.
The song Bloom is a kind of hymn to summer.
Wookie The Huge - Hedonist
Wookie The Huge is a younger band, formed in 2019, signed by Rory Hughes, a Slovenian musician with Canadian-Irish roots. With his backing band, he creates original music, a modern blend of indie rock, somewhere between The Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes. You could also say that their creativity is conceptual, in fact, they have released 4 singles so far - Blue (Hopeless Romantic), Irrelephant, Spinning (The Outcast), and Hedonist. In each of them they represent different personality traits.
The latest single, released this July, is Hedonist, characterized by an addiction to comfort, which is slowly destroying it.
Anyone who likes catchy, power-pop music should just listen to all the songs.
Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz - The Girl From Ipanema
And finally, In Memoriam.
On 6 June, the musical diva Astrud Gilberto, perhaps less known to younger music lovers, but in her active time an icon of bossa nova, a musical genre that developed in the late 1950s, combining samba and cool jazz, passed away at the age of 83.
She was popular all over the world and, because of the strong influence she had on the modern music scene (Sade, Sinead O'Connor, Michael Franks, Pat Metheney, Suzanne Vega, Madonna, Amy Winehouse, and many others cite her as an inspiration), it is right that she should be remembered.
With her performances, she aroused the imagination of the listeners, with her cheerful smile and sensual voice, she would make many people fall in love with her, without even seeing her. And if they saw her, they would completely lose their minds.
Song The Girl From Ipanema made her famous all over the world.
That's all for today, I hope you liked something, and thank you for your attention.

Thanks. This is my 30th #newtunes post this year, and you can see how many there have been in other years at the links for the years. There are also my Spotify yearly lists. You can start with 2019 which is the shortest list. 😎🎶
Although it's a bit late, it doesn't prevent me from commenting on your list.
The positive aspect of this is that it's a pleasant surprise: Wookie The Huge. It's definitely worth listening to!
Just after that are King Krule and Blue Lake. Blue Lake are skilled in telling musical stories, while King Krule always reminds me of David Byrne, an American.
Is SANAM an updated version of the "Atom Heart Mother"?
It's unfortunate that Astrud is always promoted with this song for Copacabana, which is almost used for tourism advertising. She has many great songs in her repertoire.
Thanks for the comment. Wookie is also a surprise for me. I heard it on the radio on my commute to work and I found it interesting, but I didn't know who the band was. Then I looked at the radio playlist ( maybe a useful site for someone else where radio playlists are) and saw that it was Wokie The Huge.
Thanks for the tip. Saved and will definitely be used many times in the future.
