Field Updates - Drought, Heat, and Pumpkins

Hello, everyone interested in gardening! πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

A little about my farming again. It's been a little over a month since my last post and it's getting hotter and hotter here, with rain coming out of nowhere...
According to the weathermen, May was the rainiest month in fifty years. For almost the whole of June, and by now, we are in the second half of July, there hasn't been a drop of rain at all! And meteorologists say it will be like this for at least two more weeks! This climate has turned upside down, and we will have to adapt if we want to continue to plant our own vegetables.

My first step in this direction was to bring another water tank (1,000 l) to the field; now I have two. Let's say I'm lucky because I have a river about 70 m away from which I can draw water into the cistern. Even though there is a drought, I hope that the water will not run out now.

On the other hand, this river is prone to flooding in autumn and winter. The photos below are from last year's autumn floods when the water reached the edge of the field.

It has become extremely challenging, with too much or insufficient water.

I'll start with pumpkins today because I mentioned them in the title. I usually have pumpkins at the end of a post, but since I've signed up for the Hive world pumpkin championship hosted by @hive-world-champ I'll do it now.
@der-prophet, @beeber, @zekepickleman, and @solymi will probably be happy because they won't have to read all the way to the end :)

Despite the drought, my pumpkins are thriving because I water them every few days. I now water them even more frequently, as I have installed two water tanks.
I planted these first.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

These pumpkins are edible, and some of the fruits have already appeared. They are shaped like butternut squash but are not orange. We will see later how much they progress and if they change color.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

On the other side of the field, in the beginning, my wife and I scattered seeds of ordinary pumpkins, the ones used for Halloween, and something took hold. There are also two lines of corn from last year's seed. However, as we have not watered anything for two weeks (we have been at sea), this does not look very promising. Dry all over. I admit I may have neglected this part of the field a little.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

But I believe that with regular watering, the plants will pick up (we are going to the seaside again in a fortnight for a week or so :)). And if it doesn't rain again, I'll have to jump home to water :)

Well, to go further, potatoes are a disaster. A month ago, I was so proud of it; it looked so good. Then it got some disease, potato blight, and within a week, it was all yellow and brown. Disaster. I must dig it up as soon as possible if I want any crops.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

The tomatoes are fine for now. I did notice that some of the leaves have started to turn yellow, which means that they, too, have been infected with potato blight. We have plucked them away. We will see what happens to the fruit.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

We are already picking cucumbers and courgettes.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

Peppers and eggplants are small and require much water for growth, so we will intensify the watering.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

The last three broccoli and the other six have already been cut. Apparently, they are growing again but are smaller.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

Leafy kale: I haven't tried it yet this year, but I'm looking for an interesting recipe to try.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

Young and common beans are climbing to the top, and we eagerly await the fruits.
In between, we also planted ground beans, which have a history of getting sick here and producing nothing. We will have to wait and see how they fare this year.

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

πŸ†πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸ₯•

Finally, here's what I picked up yesterday: radicchio and chard, some green beans, cucumbers, and a few cherry tomatoes.

Thank you for your attention and for persevering to the end. πŸ˜€

How are you dear friend @seckorama good morning
The weather has become unpredictable, in much of the world these extreme things are happening, either it rains a lot or we die from drought.
How great that you have these tanks to accumulate water for irrigation, and I hope the river has enough water to supply your cisterns.
How satisfying to see that you are having your first crops, your plants look very good, especially the pumpkins, I hope you can participate in the #hive pumpkin contest and live up to the competition
I appreciate you sharing this garden update.
Have a great day

Thank you for the good wishes, @jlufer. Yes, almost daily work is required on these vegetables. And this competition is just for fun :)

Since there hasn’t really been rain drops, it means that our have to water your plants very well
They look very good though
You’re doing well

Now I have about 2000 liters of water, and with this pace, 5 liters per plant every second day, I have enough water for two weeks, maybe a few days more. But I hope that rain will come in a week, and I'll collect water from the roof of the tool shed.😎

I am very sorry for what you are going through because of the weather Mr. @seckorama I hope that everything will stabilize soon, and you will not have to store water for irrigation
congratulations on the harvest, everything looks really good

Yes, I just hope that when the heat stops, there won't be a storm like last year's, which was a real disaster...

Ah I see you already have fruit on it . My two pumpkin plants are just huge so far, I water 20 litres a day. So far there are only flowers but no fruit.

20 liters a day! That's a huge amount of water. If I continue watering the plants every other day with five liters of water as I have been doing, I will run out of water in two weeks. But I have there now almost 2000 liters of water :)

Yeah, when we go on holiday (and we'll go in the next few weeks), the field is like a jungle. πŸ˜€

I hope the pumpkins thrive and you win the Hive championship. Your veggies look great despite the weather. Amazing work done on it

Thank you for the best wishes. Vegetables require almost daily attention. We will be going to the seaside again soon, and when we return, if there is no drought, the garden will be overgrown, as it has been in previous years. 😎

(en/de) Cool how your pumpkins are already growing!
After I broke my 4th lumbar vertebra a month ago, or so to speak it "collapsed", I was in hospital for 2 weeks and now I'm supposed to really keep quiet until it heals.
2 pumpkins have ended up in the raised bed, none are "on the tree" yet. And many are waiting for @music-nature . HIVE meetup July for distribution unfortunately canceled by @reiseamateur. Couldn't go anyway.
So I have no clue, how my #hwc2024 will turn out.
