RULESET: Fire & Regret

Description:

All units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle. Enemy units that attack with ranged attacks receive damage back.

Damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up.
Ranged attack units with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks.
The Amplify ability increases damage.

The Strategy

My strategy for this high mana battle with the Fire and Regret ruleset was to nerf their melee damage and put up as many anti-magic tanks as possible. I chose to go with a Lily Shieldpaw as a summoner and a triple anti-magic tank setup.

I rely on Chaos Dragon with his four magic damage with blast and scatter shot ability to take out support monsters even if the opponent brings a taunt to control my attack.

So the idea is to outlast my opponent and slowly grind them down.

The Summoner

Lily Shieldpaw is a legendary dragon summoner particularly useful in this ruleset as it provides extra health, camouflage and triage abilities.

1st Slot - Tank

Robo Dragon knight is the old reward card and one of the few older modern cards I have in my collection that are maxed out. This is one of the best tanks in the game. It is particularly useful in this ruleset as it has a high health and high shield combined with void. Void is very important here as our opponent is likely to rely on magic monsters under this ruleset due to receiving damage back for the ranged attacks. Robo-Dragon Knight also has piercing and divine shield abilities and comes with a base attack of five and speed of three.

2nd Slot - Secondary Anti-Magic Tank

Baakjira is a legendary Chaos set monster that is great against magic attackers. It also comes with an important heal, slow and strengthen abilities. It has a base speed of two and health of sixteen for only six mana.

3rd Slot - Anti-Magic Tank

Djinn Oshannus is a great secondary tank used here as a third anti-magic tank. This legendary reward monster comes with a base speed of five, has eleven health and three magic damage all for only eight mana. It also has all important void, phase and forcefield abilities. With the additional enrage ruleset this tank might become almost unhittable.

4th Slot - Magic Damage Dealer Monster

Chaos Dragon is one of the best magic damage dealers as it has four magic damage with a blast. It also has an important blind and scattershot abilities. It comes with a base health of ten and four shield as well as three speed for a hefty fourteen mana.

5th Slot - Support Monster

Merdaali Guardian is a great support monster particularly useful in this ruleset as we will be trying to outlast our opponent. For only three mana this monster brings crucial tank heal and shield repair abilities as well as strengthen. It has no damage but has four speed and four health.

6th Slot - Opportunity Poison Monster

Deeplurker is a common Chaos Legion set monster, but it is anything but common for this ruleset. It comes with a critical demoralize ability to nerf melee damage that might be coming in the ruleset where ranged attackers are not optimal. It also has poison and opportunity abilities which are important to take out low health support monsters on the enemy team. Additionally it comes with a base speed of four and five melee damage with seven health points.

THE BATTLE

Our opponent brought an impressive set of monsters such as one of the best and most expensive Riftwatcher set monsters: Agor Longtail and a promo card Oshuur Constantia. Overall of the seven cards on the field six of his cards are legendary. He has a taunt with self-heal and two triage monsters that will heal this taunt tank. Additionally he brought shield repair and double resurrect. Will we be able to get through?

In the first round their Carnage Titan did miss once which was important. At the start of round two we are down one health and shield on or first tank. Opponent is down four shield on the first tank and four shield on the taunt tank. We did lower health of four of their monsters but that is no indication with double triage going forward.
image.png

In the second round we were able to land poison on the taunt tank and they used up one resurrect on Spirit Hoarder. We are down to only two shield and four health on our primary tank. Unfortunately it looks like it will go down in the third round...
image.png

As predicted we lost our primary tank in the third round. Fortunately we were able to take out two of their monsters including the one with resurrect ability before it was used! This is starting to look much better for us.

Fourth round didn't bring much of a change and we are trying to outlast our opponent and rely on scattershot to take out two of their monsters in the middle.

In fifth round we were able to take out one of the middle monsters with our scattershot:

In sixth round we got dangerously close to loosing our secondary tank. It can happen in round seven. But we are also slowly but surely grinding on both of their tanks:

And in the seventh round we finally took out two of the three remaining monsters. This looks like victory!

And finally in round nine we take a victory over a much higher rated opponent from a higher league:
