Camel Surfer - Pyramids - Egypt
Hail to the Hive!
On the day we visited the Giza Plateau , which just so happened to be my birthday, we were the first people to enter the area. As we slowly made our way towards the pyramids we encountered camels being taken towards where we guessed they had customers waiting to ride.
Some were headed downhill towards the entrance and others uphill so we were a little confused as to what was going on and even if we should be on that particular path at all.
But with the early morning sun and scattered clouds they made for quite the striking image.
One of the camel riders stopped and tried to persuade us to take a camel ride around the pyramids, which I politely declined at first as we just wanted to wander around aimlessly at our own pace.
However his Jedi powers were strong and he managed to convince @millycf1976 to at least sit on the camel to see how it felt.
After seeing her huge smile and listening to her giggle the decision to just do the camel ride was instantly made and off we went!
As the camel stands up you lurch strongly forward and then back which had my eyes open so wide but once up and off a big smile also crossed my face at the fact that I was not only riding a camel, but riding a camel towards the Pyramids.
And as we gently rocked side to side, channeling my inner Clint Eastwood/Lawrence of Arabia, plodding upwards towards an area from which to view these amazing structures, I marvelled at the amazing views and all the thousands of years of history that they represented.
There were still hardly any tourists about as we had timed our entrance to perfection.
For the first few hours we almost felt like we had the place to ourselves. Amazing views. Solitude, peace, with only the occasional other camel rider crossing our paths.
So comfortable was @millycf1976 that she could even surf the camel, standing on the saddle beaming her famous smile across the desert sands.
So as much as I was reluctant to take a touristy camel ride around the pyramids I have to say it was a great way to spend my birthday morning. And if I can pass on one piece of sound advice if you are ever to visit this amazing olace…..GO EARlY! Get to the office for 07:30am and don’t visit on Friday, Saturday or Sunday as it will be crazy busy. Oh and don’t be afraid to do a camel ride, it’s awesome. We had the driver drop us off at the last and smallest pyramid and we then casually wandered back walking around them all, one by one all the way back to the entrance. As we were staying less than 100m from the ticket office getting there first was easy and I would recommend doing the same.
Do these things and you’ll have the ancient place to yourself for at least a short while. It is truly amazing ….

Wow, this is one wonderful travel experience with the camels.😍 I never thought one could stand on a camel's back!
Great photos!
Well I didn’t @millycf1976 is the camel surfer 😂
Haha @callmesmile! I never would have thought of standing on a camel either. It was the guide who insisted and the camel was not bothered at all. I get the feeling that the camel who has taken me around that way if his master had instructed him (they are obedient), but I would not have been comfortable enough. 🙃
Hmmm I still wasn't about to do it though 😂
Maybe next time...
Errrrrr nope
Not even if you're holding a bottle of beer?
Ahh now you’re talking
Haha! Beer, the magic word!
You are a good gymnast there @millycf1976 for perfectly balancing yourself! You even look so comfortable!😉 @scubahead is right, you are a camel surfer. Hahaha
Seems you two had a very great time there!☺️
Yes, the area is vast and spectacular. It felt surreal to be on the grounds, and the magnitude of it all stroke me 😍

!LOL Funny that you mention "Jedi" as most of the shots in the franchise were in dessert lands 😂.

As it is with most tourist attractions 🙈.

Happy Birthday! It is one of my bucket list too , to try riding a camel as I saw my father has done it before when he was working in Oman :)
Your photos are great, by the way!
I was thinking that the pyramids were so far from the sea and the scuba head might have a challenge with this. Definitely not the case as you adventure on the turf as well as you do in the surf.
The sky in those shots is so powerful, it almost overshadows the neat perspective and people on a camel caravan.
So much fun visiting Egypt with you man.
Really beautiful photos, simply amazing, congratulations my friend, have a nice day, the best regards 🙋🙋
Coo Coo shots, never thought I would see that many camels by the pyramids. And Milly looks pretty happy, esp. standing on that big cat, livin' the dream.
Happy belated birthday Cam!!
Comon!!! It's your birthday, you need to do something silly and cheesy!!!!
Absolutely:). Best present was the smile on @millycf1976 face 😃

Happy belated birthday. Al truly lovely way to spend your birthday morning. I think when you channeled your inner Lawrence of Arabia you were told to go early. It is amazing that you could be there without the onslaught of tourists that is truly special.
Great photos and lovely to see a smiling @millycf1976 - who is truly courageous standing on the back of the camel. I have been on camels a few times in Egypt but I only for rides which seemed courageous enough. Seeing your photos bring back great memories.
