The generation that never hesitated anything
On Friday got a call from one of my very old friend - his mother expired and the 11th day was on Saturday - the day on which, as per our traditions, family and friends are invited for a lunch or dinner. These are all our traditions to start life fresh again. The occasion was a bit very different in that, I knew, all our old friends would come there. All college friends from nineties with whom a lot of memory is associated and I think, they are going to be with us at least for this life. Usually I don't prefer to attend functions at short notice, because I need a bit of planning to make sure, things are taken care when I am not at home. But for this one, I instantly made up mind to visit and then the time spent there was really a reflection of all those old memories.
Those old days, when Cycle was our pride - going to all places would easily end up 15 - 20 kilometers a day. Going to college, going to tuition, go and buy vegetables, any other house hold tasks - never we would hesitate or deny. BSA SLR Cycle was the craze of that time - the guy having that would be proud but then who cares!! There was never any differentiation between friendship and money. Friends would always ask for or take away anything they would need - they would come to home without asking. In fact, there was no means to ask then, isn't it ? Today people call before coming - but believe me, these friends do not call even today. It's the same old school for us even today. If they know I am at home, then they would come without even informing. The same was observed that day - no question asked on who is earning how much. That same feelings, to tell anything to a friend or ask for anything without feeling bad about it - two friends called me and they ordered me to pick them up. That kind of friendship when we we always shared what we had - I remember, I used to get 100 rupee a month for eating tiffin at the college canteen. Don't consider it small , that time, it was no less. But in college we all would go together and then share whoever could buy. And thankfully, we did not have to buy mineral water - ya, the batch that drank tap water happily - no bottle or glass - direct from tap. It was so much fun to spend that evening, no one was in mood to leave for the dinner. And with a promise to meet again - I proposed to do a feast and spend the entire day.
And just to give you a brief about the friend whose mother died - we formed a batch of four to prepare for competitive because we did not have a lot of money to take any short of coaching. So every day, we would gather together and read for six hours - and that is how he got the job, first from our batch. There was lot of hardship, but together we passed that time and move ahead - we were happy with everything.
And then where ever I go, I take him with me and this was a special memory for him - every friend knew him. So much so that, sometimes my friends would go and eat at a roadside shop where they knew my father would come to drink tea. And they also knew that he would pay for everything - imagine the fun. It was not just a day or two - many days spanning over years. I realized it only after two years 😀 but then I was happy to approve it continue.

I wish we do have this kind of a day where family and friends are invited for a dinner launch. The only day I that could be related to is is during Christmas time.

You're right, sometimes, friend, real friends don't create any boundary, they come to your house whenever they want, they do not create any sort of limit and this is actually the beautiful thing about them. I'm sorry for your friend who lost a relative. Those memories from when you were young was very special.

I also consider myself old school, because I grew up without the tech of today. No smartphones, video games, and the like. I and my cousins will ride our own bikes to the farm and have fun. Snacks were all around us, wild berries, fruits, fish, frogs, and even rats.
How I wish I could reunite with them in the future and talk about our adventures when we were young.

Those days were beautiful, no stress at all. All these new tech just add up more stress.
Very true, the tech stuff has made the kids of today less social and less physically active. And yeah, those are the good old days :)
a true friendship forged on the basis of camaraderie is not forgotten just like that and it is that even if they are in their worst days knowing that you can count on friends like this is a unique joy
Reuniting with old friends and reminiscing about all the adventures we've had is the best we can get. They are friends for life and who are always there in good times and bad.
If I could manage it so that my deeds in life could echo when I am gone in a positive way, I will have lived a good life. Great reminder and it is wonderful to leverage some positive change through a negative situation.

Wow. Hahahaha. Old days are the best I must confess. I saw a man rolling up some raps of food. Yes, it looks so much interesting that way and also the best way eating even in public regardless of the environment. But nowadays, we are too shy to even eat outside. I love this type of gathering. It reminds me of my late Dad too. They always meet up during the AGM ( Annual General Meeting). @sanjeevm

I have such tied friendships as well and during college at some point, I even shared the bed with some of my mates, meals too... Funny how years pass by and I guess time strengthens such relationships.

When a person leaves this world, no one can give as much as his family because he has spent a lot of time with that person and misses you all the time. It's great to see all of you friends because in this day and age no one has time to meet each other and everyone is busy living their modern life. I believe that we should keep in touch with each other because no one knows when someone will leave this world. Whenever we meet old friends, sitting together and reminiscing about the old times is so much because it is the best time of all of our lives.
The biggest happiness is that we meet our old friends. We remember this moment for whole life. And you are lucky that you still have old friends. After reading your post, I also remembered my friends.

This remind me of my school, I use to go on my cycle, My sister use to be with me, I First had to drop her to her school, then I had to pick one of my friend from our way to school and then we both go to school on the cycle. These are one of the best memories of my life. Now the life has changed a lot, we may have cars, bikes, but can't create those memories. Please accept my condolence for your friends mother @sanjeevm

Good friends are precious and even if you haven't seen each other for years, you pick up right where you left off. With good friends, there is no hesitation to embrace each other and there are no feelings of discomfort. This had to be a special day even if you were getting together to celebrate the passing of a loved one.

I have already said that in some of your previous posts but you really have some good old friends around you and that´s something one should be very grateful these days... I also like the part where you said that nobody was talking about money and how much who earns. Again, very rare these days and I hate it everytime my friends start talking about money, jobs, careers, things they bought etc... Fortunately, I also have some good friends with whom we talk about other things, we know each other very well, we have a lot of fun memories dating back to decades ago and we thus always enjoy being together for a couple of beers :)
It's a privilege to have them, and I think, as we grow older, we need to meet on a daily basis. Nothing can compensate that time spent with friends.
Well said but meeting them on daily basis is impossible for me. There are good old friends of mine that I haven´t seen in years, for different reasons but mostly because of my nomadic lifestyle. With other friends, when I´m lucky, I get to see them a few times a year. I wish it was more often...
