Chess960 - Rules and Position 518
Hello everyone.
Playing Chess960 is same as standard chess with only one difference. Starting positions or setup of the game.
In Chess960 we have 960 starting positions.
Rules
It may seem that Chess960 is without rules in setup but there are couple of rules while arranging the starting positions.
First rule is that King has to be between two rocks.
Second rule is that bishops have to be opposite colors.
And that is all about setting up the starting positions.
Pawns are on second rank and we place black pieces on the opposite side.
And after you pick your position you are ready to play.
Castling
Now lets come to the important part Castling.
While playing online you just click and you castle. Sometimes you dont castle until the position is bad or lost so you assume castling will save you ( I assume it must have happened to someone else as well). It seems that there are some different rules while castling and King or Rook will move some strange way.. I did not know the rules until know.
And it is quite simple. As simple as in standard chess. No movement of King or Rook prior, King cannot be in check or move through check and King and Rook must not have any pieces between them.
Castling rule
When you castle in Chess960 your King and Rook will be at same place as in standard chess after castling.
For example if we castle queen side in standard chess we will have King on c1 or c8 and Rook on d1 or d8. In Chess960 they will be on same positions after castling on queen side. And if you castle King side the King will be on g1 and g8 and Rook on f1 or f8. In Chess960 the position for King side castling will be same.
Also important part is that Queen side is always with d file and King side is one with e file.
It is very simple and easy.
Now it is time to castle with understanding where your piece will land (hehe).
Additional note
Sometimes King or Rook will not have to move if they are already on their castling position.
Rook closest to the a file is used for Queen side castling and Rook closest to the h file is used for King side castling.
Now lets go through some castling variants.
Lets start with this position.
Queen side castling - King stays on c8 or c8 and Rook goes to d1 or d8. Same position as Queen side castling in standard chess.
This is King side castling. King goes to g1 or g8 and Rook goes to f1 or f8. Same position as King side castling in standard chess.
One more position.
Here we have position where King is between two Rooks on b1 and b8.
When we castle King side King will end up on g1 or g8 and Rook on f1 or f8. Same as castling King side in standard chess.
Since this is the position castling Queen side is not possible because there is a Rook on c1 and c8. I will move Rooks to the h1 and h8 just to be able to castle.
This is how Queen side castle will look. King on c1 and c8 and Rook on d1 and d8. Again same as standard chess Queen side castling.
Some same and similar positions.
Last time while playing in tournament I noticed that we got almost same starting position as in standard chess.
This was position with my game with @stranger27
This is position No 534 in Chess960. Only King and Queen are misplaced. I was surprised to see this position in tournament. While running away from standard chess here we go.
Standard chess starting position is position No 518 in Chess960.
This familiar position.
Thank you for the explanation about castling. For me it was tricky to understand final king and rook positions after castling
It was good to learn about it as well
