Keeping Your Environment Clean

One of the ways to live a healthy life is by maintaining cleanliness. However, cleanliness does not only refer to personal hygiene but goes further to include your environment and surroundings. If you are neat but your environment is full of dirts, then you are still at risk of diseases. Apart from the fact that a clean environment promotes a good health, it also creates a sustainable world and makes the world worth living. Environmental cleanliness also includes the observable surrounding; land, water, air, and other parts of the ecosystem.

Some years back, I went to visit one of my aunties who stays in another state during our vacation. When I got there, I discovered that, due to the road that was being constructed, a stagnant water was created right in front of the street and has stayed there for weeks pending when the contractors will resume work. After a while, I noticed that the people, particularly children, who stays in the compounds close to the stagnant water started falling ill. It got so bad that severe cases of diarrhoea and dysentery were recorded in those places, which has never been so. The entire street become concerned about it because they knew where the problem was coming from and they needed to get rid of the water which was already started to stink.

In one of the weekends, the entire tenets of the street contributed some funds and called for environmental experts to come and clear the site since the government was not quick about it. It took some money and a few hours with machines and the place become clean. After clearing it and working on the drainage for easy passage of water, the incessant case of outbreak of disease became a thing of the past. Not just that, the sight became worthy and it was no longer looking so messy. People could comfortably walk pass the place without placing their hands over their nose as they did. You will agree me that there is a kind of peace and serenity that can be created by a clean environment.

A few months back, a news surfaced online about a woman who was caught on camera dumping refuse inside the drainage gutter while it was raining, with the intention that the water would carry the refuse to somewhere else. If she had reasoned with her brain first, should would have known that her actions would block the drainage and create a lot of problems. I mean, why would someone discard waste products inside the gutter? Not only will it create environmental issues with the accumulation of such waste products, but particles of it can also be washed into the water body and destroy the marine habitat. This is why one needs to be conscious about keeping their environment clean for the sake of not just their own lives but others as well.

A lot of people do not know that every human has a responsibility towards their environment and the planet earth at large. If you want a better world, and if you want things to get better, then you should also know that you have a part to play in it. Everyone has a part and responsibility to play in ensuring that the world becomes cleaner and neater. Right from your own surroundings, you should ensure its cleanliness. I remember when a particular NGO championed this course some years back about keeping the environment clean. They sensitized the populace about the benefits of having a clean environment. What attracted me most was their slogan: "A cleaner nation is a healthier nation."

One of the things I have observed is that the survival of the human race is also a resultant effect of a cleaner and more conducive environment. By clean, I mean an environment void of pollutants (air, land, and water pollutants) which can be harmful to humankind. You have to also know that various ecosystems in our planet are interconnected. That is, when one ecosystem is dysfunctional or compromised, it will also affect other ecosystems. So you have to ensure not to degrade your immediate environment because it can have ripple effect and affect other interconnected ecosystems. To ensure a cleaner and more conducive world, then you have to start from your own immediate environment. Remember that a cleaner world is a better world.

Peace on y'all
