Foundation Of Relationships [Part 1]

The rate at which relationships break these days is getting so alarming that one needs to take measures to build their own relationship. A few days back, I read over the social media how a relationship of one of the very renowned influencers in this part of the world came crashing down. When I got the full gist, I realized that part of what they pointed out as the cause of the breakup was something very seemingly little and avoidable. But like I normally tell people, "it is the small things that can wreck the most havocs." So here, we shall take a look at foundations upon which a successful relationship has to be built on.

The first foundation here is communication. A lot of relationships and even marriages are facing challenges simply because of lack of communication, inadequate communication, or bad communication. You cannot just assume that your partner can pick something from your mind, so learn to speak out and communicate your feelings to them. More so, communication does not only involve talking and talking, you also need to develop the art of listening to what the other person has to say. It is in your communication that you will know more about your partner; their needs, intentions, feelings, etc.

Apart from the verbal communication, you also need to pay attention to other expressions that are not verbalized. If you see a relationship where communication is prioritized, you will see a people that have made conscious efforts to see their relationship work. It is not everytime you will be acting busy, try to create out time for moments of quality communicating with your partner. There is no way you can claim to be in a good relationship or in love, and your partner does not speak to you daily and you will be comfortable.

Another foundation to explore here is appreciation. Many people think that they are doing the other party a favour or it is a privilege to be in the relationship with them. This has made them to develop an entitlement mentality over things and expect that everything will be done for them without them appreciating any of them. Lack of appreciation is a clear indication of the nature of pride and this has wrecked a lot of relationships. For a relationship or even friendship to work, the people involved must learn how to be grateful and appreciative of the acts of goodness done by the other person no matter how seemingly insignificant or little it may be.

You will agree with me that every human loves to be valued and appreciated, so by being grateful, you tend to make your partner feel valued, and in turn, they will also make you feel valued. You will be surprised how a seemingly little "thank you" can go a long way to strengthen the foundation of the relationship. The sound of gratitude can create a magical effect that cannot be explained, yet it is undeniable. Regularly appreciating your partner is a fundamental requirement of building and sustaining a good relationship.

The final foundation for this part is to be supportive at all times. You should make your presence to be felt in the relationship. Let your partner be glad that they have you; so contribute meaningfully to their growth and development, then render your support where and when necessary. You do not have to always be on the receiving end, you also need to be able to bring in something that will add value to them. In fact, being in a relationship with you should be an addition and not a burden, so do not make it look like a burden.

It is worthy to note that support does not start and end with finance, it can also come as an advice, a listening ear, an idea, or even emotional support. Let them feel your presence and let them know that you are there for them. This will enable them to also go all out for you. Trust me; when you go a mile for your partner, they will also be motivated to do the same for you and that is how the relationship will be strengthened and will be enjoyable.

Thanks for reading

Peace on y'all
