“What Do I See?”

I see a woman walking in the rain. She wears a purple polythene disposable raincoat. On her head sat a straw hat. On one shoulder is a support stick used to hold a woven tray basket which contains some vegetables and on the back is a polythene bag which houses the rest of the vegetables.

In front of her is someone riding a motorcycle, wearing a similar raincoat as her.

“What Do I Feel?”

I admire her strength and hard work.

STORY

“I need to hurry home before this rain starts”, Mama Face-Two said as she raised her head at the dark and cloudy sky.

Mama Face-Two is a neighbor of mine who sells vegetables at a market stall. People love buying from her because her vegetables are always fresh. She always tells us that she loves the rainy season because that's when her vegetables grow faster and fresher which makes it more healthy.

Mama Face-Two is a widow with two children. She loves her kids so much and ensures she provides for them.

The rain started, dropping heavily down the roof of our house.

“My mum forgot to take the umbrella this morning. I hope she doesn't get drenched by this rain”, Seun, Mama Face-Two first son said looking worried.

“Don't Worry Seun, I'm sure your mum will find another alternative”, I said, giving him a little bit of assurance.

Seun and his brother Lekan always stay with us whenever their mum goes to the market to sell her vegetables.

The rain continued pouring for a long time before subsiding a little. Seun looked up from the window of our living room “Lekan, Mama is back”, he screamed while his brother who curled himself on our sofa quickly jumped up. I smiled knowing that no amount of rain can keep her from coming home on time to see her kids.

We all looked outside to see Mama Face-Two in a purple polythene disposable raincoat. She placed all she was carrying on the front porch of her home and headed towards the direction of our house to pick up her children.

“See, I told you your mum would seek an alternative against the rain”, I said to Seun, whose face lit up with a smile.
