"Hi Tessa, what's up? I have been trying to reach you for two days now, your number is unavailable", I said to my friend on the phone seeing as I was finally able to reach her.

"I am so sorry Rukkie, my phone has been switched off for while now", she replied sounding tired.

"What's up with that? I have been very worried", I asked again because I was indeed very worried about her. It's unlike her to switch off her phone like that.

"Remember the new job I told I was starting"

"Ye-s , I responded growing impatient"

"Well I started working there two days ago and the pay was nice and everything but they have a no-phone policy" she explained

"What do you mean by a no-phone policy", I asked.

"We are expected to switch off our phone(s) and submit them when we resume work and get it back when we close from work"

"So how do people reach you? What if you have an emergency? Or you needed to make a call yourself ?"

"I was told to give out their company number to two of my loved ones who can only call if there was an emergency and I had to give my dad and my boyfriend"

"I understand but who will pick the call on your behalf then?" I hissed, clearly becoming angry at the stupid policy.

"There is a person in charge of calls and in case of emergency,I will be notified and the call will be transferred to their call office where I can take my call", she further explained.

"This doesn't sound like a good working environment", I said feeling flabbergasted.

"I agree, but you know how bad I needed a job. I will make sure to always reach out to you when I get back from work and you can also leave me a message and I will get it when I switched on my phone", She concluded.

"Well, if you are okay with it, I guess I will try to be okay with it", I finally gave in.

"Thank you girl", said Tessa while heaving a sigh of relief.

We changed the subject and talked about other things before finally hanging up.

What do you see?

I see a small office with a glass door situated close to the entrance of a company. The office has a "telephone symbol" beside it's wall which means it's likely an office where calls are made/received.

What do you feel?

I am not very happy as I see it as a ploy to monitor the calls of people working in the company.

Is this policy really strange? I remember the time no one had a cell phone and in case of need, people could still reach each other.

Yes it's a bit strange though some big companies here have that policy as well. I think it's to help workers more productive since we have some people who can stay on their phone for long hours.

Thank you for coming around.

I remember we had it with emails. It infects the work and a lot of time is wasted if employers check the email every few minutes.

I guess this policy is fine, I mean in cases of emergency you can still be reached. Maybe the company doesn't want it staff being distracted or obsessed with their devices

That's what I thought as well because some workers can stay on their phones for hours when they should be working.

Thank you for coming around.

I worked in an organization where you can not use the phone for a second or else they will deduct money from your salary, the policy is established in private sector

Interesting piece Rukkie, I've also had friends who were faced with no call policy in their place of work, I find it annoying too.
