Creativenonfiction#67 - My Love For Books Almost....
Have you ever read a book so intriguing and captivating that you can't get enough of it?
Growing up, I was used to reading any book I could lay my hands on. It could be a 50-page book or a 600-page book. No matter the size of the book, I will read it. It is usually printed books because I wasn't allowed to use a phone till I was almost done with secondary school. So the only way I could read books is to get them from bookstores or borrow from my classmates and some of my classmates do have loads of novels to lend.
Back then in school, the common genre of books was centered on romance and while I sometimes enjoy them, other times I get irritated by the whole mushy description in the novel but that won't stop me from reading it 😃😃😃. Sometimes I would read to the extent that I would forget I wanted to eat. There was a day when my reading habit almost got me into trouble.
"Rukkie, I need you to get the things needed to make dinner", my mom called on me as she was on her way out.
" Alright ma", I responded but still focused on what I was reading. I knew she was listing the things to buy and I was nodding my head but trust me I wasn't paying attention.
About 5 hours later, I was still glued to what I was reading before my stomach growled signifying it needed some food. Then I remembered I had yet to get the foodstuffs needed to make dinner.
Looking outside I knew it would be dark soon so I quickly picked up the money my mum left me and got ready to buy the things she told me to buy. It was when I got outside that I was faced with a new dilemma. "I couldn't remember what she told me to buy", I tried racking my brain and all I could remember was rice.
I bought rice but couldn't remember the other things I needed to buy. So I had to wait for my mom to get back and knowing she would beat the hell out of me, I quickly thought of doing other things that could help reduce my punishment. I washed and cleaned and I was sweeping the verandah when she got back. When she saw me, she asked if I had gotten what she asked me to get but I told her I had gotten only rice and that I planned on getting the rest after I was done with the house chores.
Seeing that I was busy she told me not to bother and that she would go and get them herself. On hearing that, my joy knew no bounds, that was my saving grace that day. After that day, I always try to pay more attention whenever she sent me on an errand and sometimes I would just write it down so I won't forget.
Now that I have a phone, I am back to my old self of staying long on my phone reading everything I could find. The reason I prefer ebooks is because of flexibility. I don't have to carry loads of books with me because I can always take my book anywhere I go. One of my favorite apps for reading ebooks is Wattpad.
One of my favorite books on Wattpad is the Storm and Silence series by Robert Thier. I could remember the day I started reading it, I couldn't do anything else except stay glued to my phone reading.
I think reading this book was the longest I have gone on my phone even when I knew it was not good health-wise to stay on the phone for a long period. With this series, I couldn't help myself. Mr Ambrose was a funny character. For those who might have read the series will understand what means, and if you have yet to read this book, I recommend you do. I am sure you will enjoy reading it.
Though occasionally, I still enjoy reading printed books. Especially when I want to relax, I would take a book and sip on a hot coffee while swiping through the pages.
you sneaky genius!
I bet your mom wasn't really fooled, but let you get away with it for doing the cleaning.
😀😀😀 I thought so as well. She probably just decided to let me off that day.
Thank you for coming around.
I have to admit, your story about forgetting what your mom asked you to buy because you were too engrossed in your book is very funny. I can just imagine you nodding your head absentmindedly while your mom listed the things to buy. And then, you only remembered rice, you needed to be caned but you got away with sense..lol
I haven't read the Storm and Silence series yet, but I'll definitely check it out. And I'm glad to hear that Mr Ambrose is a funny character. Thank you for sharing.
Hahaha. I was so happy I didn't get caned.
You should really try it out. You will enjoy it.
That's one of the things teenagers get in trouble for. I am not a book lover but a movie lover. It has happened countless times that we tend to forget everything our parents sent us while our minds are on the phone or books.
Thank God you escape a whooping by doing other chores. Now that I'm older, I don’t use my phone like I used to, unless I want to work. When I see teenagers nowadays, I just smile and say I was once like that—always engrossed in my phone 24/7 without doing what I was asked to do at the right time.
Hahaha I get you. I also try not to spend too much time on my phone but whenever I start a new book, I can't help it 😀😀😀
You are naughty for pulling a fast one on mom and she fell for it. I love books too but not as much as do and truly reading as become easier because of our phones.
Hahaha, they say the "fear of mothers" is the beginning of wisdom.
Thank you for coming around.
You picked up a good habit early.
I get this. Indeed books can be cumbersome and even if one has ample space, they have to be careful that they don't get carried away with their collection:)
I agree with you. That's why I think other book lovers should adopt this.
Thank you so much for your time here. It's very much appreciated.
My pleasure:)
Hehe, at least you forgot the groceries for a good course. You were reading rather than playing or doing any other outrageous things😄.
I recently grew a likeness for ebooks and I may as well check out the recommended series.

rukkie, wongi sent you LUV. 🙂 (2/3) tools | trade | connect | daily
Made with LUV by crrdlx.
Hahaha right, at least I wasn't playing.
You should try checking out the series, you will love it.
Thank you for coming around sis.
Thanks for the recommendation Sisi😊
Hi @rukkie. Sorry, but before we can curate your story, we must ask that you replace the image of the book pages with a non-copyrighted image. Copyright protection means that copyrighted material cannot be reproduced in any form without permission. There are many pictures of books on Pixabay and Unsplash which would be suitable. Thank you!
I have done as requested @theinkwell. I am sorry I didn't know I can't use images like that.
Thank you.
Thank you, @rukkie. We appreciate it. Your story is humorous and charming. It's wonderful when a book is so captivating that you block out the world, but of course it can also cause problems if people expect you to be listening! Thank you for sharing your story in The Ink Well and for reading and commenting on the work of other community members.
Thank you so much for the feedback and for your support.
Yeah I understand. I am someone who can get buried in a book for hours. Especially when it’s a novel. I felt that way with the Mindf*ck series and The Sterling Boys 😅

I guess we can't just help ourselves when it comes to books we love.
Thanks for coming around dreemer.
I laughed on this 😅😅
I've had this similar experience so many times, not on books, but on movies and beatings came with it
Hahaha no doubt, African mothers no dey carry last.
Thanks for stopping by.
You're most welcome dear
It was a nice read, I enjoyed reading. You saved yourself by doing those house chores, she wouldn't have been happy with you if you didn't do any of those.
I have had this experience before, being engrossed in what I was reading or doing to the extent of missing my meal.
It's good to read books especially as a writer to become better. I love laying my hands on some books to read but at times I don't get to complete them, I just get information I need and that's it. But I realised I read more online, and want to be more intentional, reading hard copy books to the end and I started one this month.
It good we have Apps that can fulfil our reading desires, maybe I will try Wattpad someday.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Being a #dreemerforlife
Yes, I figured the chores I did helped me escape the beatings I would have gotten.
You should try out Wattpad and share your experience when you do.
Thank you for your time here awesome dreemer.
Thanks so much dear, will try it.
Have a wonderful day.
Being reader at a very young age has a way of moulding your personality in a positive way
Does that wattpad has enough novels in it? Is it an app too? Why I am asking is that I have found lots of apps online but only end up asking me to subscribe before I can continue reading a novel after they might have made me fall in love reading it. How does this app works please?
You were saved by those chores that day, if not, you could have seen the other side of your mom. Trust African mothers 😆

Oh my, I read Storm and Silence and my life didn't remain the same, girl. I feel like those who truly enjoy that series are gems and I'm so glad to have found a kindred soul. I'm going back to read it because of this. Relive the exhilarating experience once more.
