Creativenonfiction #47 - My Experience With A Sewing Needle
As a fashion designer, working with needles is something I have been so accustomed to as I get to use it in my life of work.
Needles are very useful for sewing and they also vary in sizes. They can be used to hem clothes, stitch buttons into clothes and so on, and of course, the machine needles itself used for sewing clothes. The funny thing is that as small yet important as it is, I have heard some myths about it.
One of the myths I heard about the needle when I was still an apprentice is that, when sewing on the machine or probably making use of needles and it pricks your fingers, then it's a sign you are understanding what you're being taught and on the way to becoming a professional yourself.
I didn't believe it of course because superstitious beliefs aren't my thing. But I could recall the day it did happen, I was at the fashion center where I was learning and that day I was sewing a customer's cloth and I can't tell if it's because I am engrossed in the music I was listening to (for I was wearing a Bluetooth device while sewing) because the next thing I knew is my finger getting pricked by the machine needle.
All of a sudden, I felt the pain "Ahhhhh", I screamed, which drew everybody's attention to me and we all saw that the sewing needle had pricked my index finger drawing just a small blood. My fashion teacher adjusted the machine and I was able to free my finger. I washed my hands and she added a tiny drop of machine oil on my finger and congratulated me on being on my way to becoming a professional 😃😃.
Though I didn't believe it, I couldn't help but feel a bit of pride. I knew I was already mastering the skill initially which is the reason why I was allowed to handle a customer's clothes. So I wouldn't say I agree that the needle had anything to do with it. Rather, it is my steadfastness and dedication into learning the skill. After that day It happened again another day and though there was no blood this time around and moreover I wasn't distracted as the first time.
The shocking part of it was the day I did my graduation from the fashion school, It is customary to have your fashion teacher pray for you and she in turn will invite other fashion teachers in the same community to attend and they would all pray for the person graduating. I remembered the moment the person leading the prayer wore hand gloves and held a new machine needle.
I was intrigued as what was going to happen when she asked me to bring my thumb. I was wondering when she suddenly turned into a nurse when she used the needle to prick my thumb while praying that I would have lots of customers bringing in their fabrics for me to sew to the extent that I would constantly use a needle.
It was bizzare yet very funny. If someone had told me they do that during graduation ceremony I wouldn't have believed them people but since it happened to me, I know that it does happens.
Thank you for reading.

Superstitious believes are something very common on this side😂😊 At least you felt a sense of pride.
#dreemerforlife
Oh I sure did. It's good to have you here sis.
Thank you so much
LoL!! That's really strange, well the truth is whatever we believe is what works for us. I don't also believe superstitious things, success don't just come to anyone but those who worked for it. If you had not been practicing too well, no matter how many times you have a needle stuck in your finger you would still be an amateur.

This is a custom that I had never heard of and it wouldn't even occur to me that it could be that way. Perhaps those who graduated as nurses received a needlestick when the ceremony took place? It would be interesting to know.
I would really love to know that too. Hahaha
Thanks for stopping by.
Lol Ahhhhhh so Aunty Rukkie like this now you have blow in the fashion world ooo😳😳
Hahaha abeg I never blow go anywhere o. 😃😃😃😃😃
Thanks for coming around sis.
You are most welcome!
Me who's scared of needles...it takes my full guts to not run away when I see such. But this was really interesting, it's a funny custom if you ask me cause it's really doesn't determine if the person gonna be good or bad while in the field of fashion but it's my opinion. Happy you made it through. Longest time from my side though #dreemport...a #dreemerforlife
Hahaha I used to be scared of needles too especially injections but I got used to it in time.
I'm happy you came visiting.
Yeah...till today I finch a bit when I see needles hehe.
Happy I stopped by...won't miss your work.
I witnessed similar superstitious belief when my Aunt was learning tailoring while I was growing up. Those things have no connection at all yet our people believe in them.
People are funny. But wait, the needle she used in pricking your thumb while praying, did it pierce your skin?
That's some vampire moves. Hope you didn't get hurt?
#dreemerforlife
Hahaha I was really shocked by the process to even feel any pain.
Thanks for coming around.
Lol. You're welcome
I can't help but laugh as I read that line:
That's quite funny if you asked me. There are safety rules that guides all professions which apprentices should be taught.
😃😃😃 It was very funny at the time.
Thanks for stopping by.
Very nice story but it must be painful to put your fingers through the needles of a sewing machine. Have a nice evening
The first time it happened, it was painful but I didn't feel much pain subsequently.
Thanks for taking the time to read and leave a comment. Greetings.
All careers and trades have their myths and beliefs that have been forged over generations, this is aimed at improving skills and learning how to do a good job. The flat tire at the graduation ceremony was very striking and interesting.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.
Oh it was very funny yet interesting.
Thanks for coming around.
Haha, it's wholesome on int's own regard. I too agree the needle won't make you a profesional but it feels nice to feel that closeness to the tribe, even when something you don't believe in. Congratulations though! It's not easy to learn something new. Well writen!
Hahaha thank you for coming around.
It seems that where you come from that needles have a life all of their own. Your story highlights everything about ingrained culture that we try to ignore because we know that the superstitions should be taken with a grain of salt, and yet…
All this superstition sha.🤣
Well at least you are learning well
