CineTv Contest #130 - Southpaw (2015) || Movie Review
When I came across the prompt for this week, I thought of which fighting movie to choose from.
Fighting movies have a wide range to choose from. Martial arts, boxing and many more. I have always been a big fan of movies. My dad and I used to watch wrestling a lot when I was much younger, it's one of our favorite pastimes.
So the movie I chose to make a review on for this prompt is titled "SOUTHPAW"
Plot Of The Movie
Southpaw is a 2015 movie. It follows Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), a professional boxer. He is also the reigning Light Heavyweight champion who loves his family so much. His wife Maureen (played by Racheal McAdams) and their daughter Leila Hope ( played by Oona Lawrence).
Billy's whole world was turned into disarray when an accident led to the death of his wife. His grief made him turn to alcohol and drugs and he started having financial problems. Moreso, his relationship with his daughter was strained as he risks losing custody of her.
Billy Hope got to the lowest point in his life when his houses and other belongings were repossessed. When his daughter was put in care of Child Protective Services, he later realized that he had to turn his life around if he was going to have a chance of getting his daughter back.
What I didn't like about the movie
The only part I didn't like about the movie was the last fight between Billy Hope and Miguel Escobar where his daughter watched the fight on TV. I felt as young as she was, she shouldn't have been allowed to watch her dad beaten up irrespective of the outcome of the fight.
How The Movie Influenced Me
While I won't entirely blame Billy for the death of his wife, I felt his wife might still be alive had he not allowed the taunts of Miguel Escobar, an upstart boxer, get to him. The fight led to Miguel's brother, Hector, pulling out a gun which led to the death of his wife.
We see things like this playing out in real life situations. Being a superstar or a champion comes with a lot of people looking to pull you down and by acknowledging these people, you have succeeded in giving them the power to control your emotions. Keeping your emotions in check despite what people might say to you is very important in life.
Billy's manager Jordan ( played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) abandoned him when he needed him the most and went to work for his opponent Miguel.
This is an important lesson that in life, some people only appear to be loyal to you when they get a lot of benefits from you. When that gets taken away, their loyalty goes away with it and that's when you realize that they were never loyal to you.
Southpaw isn't just another boxing movie, it's a movie about letting go of grief, forgiveness, redemption and second chances. This movie is one of my favorite boxing movies.
If you are a fan of boxing movies and you have yet to see this movie, do try watching it. I'm sure you would enjoy it as much as I did.
I would rate this movie 8/10.
Thank you all for reading.

Nice review.. but why did Billy's manager leave him when he needed him?
Well I guess because he was broke. Billy was suspended from fighting for a year. So no money was coming in.
Thanks for reading.
This can be so frustrating for Billy
Amazing film, I loved the depiction of the fighting sequence, and the redemption arc of Gyllenhaal's character.
