Inspired by the Yerkes-Dodson law in psychology, known as the inverted U law, researchers from New York University's Tandon School of Engineering, led by Rose Faghih, investigated the influence of personalized music on cognitive arousal and performance.

This study used participants' physiological and behavioral signals to map arousal levels against performance, and participants selected music that contained calming and exciting music components to mimic a low- and high-arousal environment.

"Human brain states are unobserved states that can constantly change due to internal and external factors, including cognitive arousal, a.k.a. intensity of emotion, and cognitive performance states", says Rose Faghih. And "Maintaining a proper level of cognitive arousal may result in being more productive throughout daily cognitive activities. Therefore, monitoring and regulating one’s arousal state based on cognitive performance via simple everyday interventions such as music is a critical topic to be investigated," she says.

And research has found that personalized music can significantly impact a person's productivity by adjusting arousal to the optimum level. And the research showed that music enhance performance, revealing music's potential as a simple, everyday tool to regulate cognitive states. And according to the research team, this research opens the door to personalized brain-computer interfaces that adjust arousal for improved cognitive functioning in daily tasks.

I already know that music affects and increases performance and productivity because it does for me, so the research results are not surprising to me. However, the results of a scientific research are much more valuable, which is why I like to see such research.
