"Unchained Melody" is a song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret (Hyman Zaret), first released on January 19, 1955. It was written as a theme for the 1955 prison film Unchained, hence the song's title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. "Unchained Melody" was such a great song that it was recorded by many artists. It is considered one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century. More than 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists in multiple languages, according to the song's publishing manager.

The most notable was by the Righteous Brothers in 1965. The Righteous Brothers' version, featuring a solo by Bobby Hatfield, became the jukebox standard upon its release. By the way, Bobby Hatfield changed the melody in the final verse, and many subsequent covers of the song are based on his version. Source

The best prom song, "Unchained Melody", has been recorded by hundreds of artists, most notably The Righteous Brothers, and their version made it even more popular and irresistible. It proved so irresistible that it became a hit again 25 years later with its sync in the popular 1990 film Ghost. I first heard this song in the Ghost film and it became one of my favorites from the moment I first heard it. Even though the song is almost 70 years old, it still remains one of the best songs of all time.
