"Every Breath You Take" is a song on their album Synchronicity by British rock band the Police, released on 20 May 1983 by A&M Records. "Every Breath You Take" was written by Sting (Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner). And it was produced by The Police and Hugh Padgham. The song topped many charts. It was also awarded Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 26th Annual Grammy Awards. The reason why I chose the song "Every Breath You Take" for today's song of the day is that even though it is 41 years old, it is still listened to a lot, and it is on YouTube's weekly top songs chart. It is quite interesting but not surprising that this song is still listened to so much. I'll talk about why below.

The Police - Every Breath You Take

"Every Breath You Take" reached over 1 billion plays on Spotify in 2021, and its music video reached over 1 billion views on YouTube in 2022. It is truly amazing and quite interesting that this song, released in 1983, is still listened to. But what's even more interesting is that in 1983, Sting, the writer of the song "Every Breath You Take", said of the song: "I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.". Sting's "nasty little song" became The Police's biggest hit. Additionally, "Every Breath You Take" features one of the most iconic guitar arpeggios of all time.

Additionally, not only is "Every Breath You Take" The Police's biggest hit, but the song's universal appeal is supported by science. In a study published by The Royal Society, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark examined streaming data for more than 4 million tracks on Spotify to determine the most popular song genres at certain times of the day. Researchers found that we can divide song listening into five different time periods, and each block has different musical qualities. And according to the research, "Every Breath You Take" scored consistently at all hours, and researchers say they found "Every Breath You Take" to be the most universal, well-rounded song in pop history. So in short, "Every Breath You Take" is an excellent all-round song, according to scientific research. Therefore, it is not surprising that this song is listened to so much and is still loved.
