Tokyo Travel #11 Night Lights & Sakura Blossoms In Shibuya

There are many hidden gems around Tokyo. Whether it be a shop, a restaurant, a temple, a park, or even a street, there is a never ending amount of unique things to see and do.

One cool spot I have often found myself drawn to is a street known as Sakura Hill.

Located about 7 minutes from Shibuya station, It's a charming, little, one way street. Lined with restaurants and sakura trees it has a romantic feel to it, especially at night.

I was walking around town back in April and saw that there was a light show going on as well as the blooming of the sakura trees. So I stopped by and joined the crowds of people taking enjoying the scenery.

I never thought adding lighting to sakura trees could make the already beautiful sight even more enjoyable until I saw this. Then again, at night the trees aren't as vivid so adding lights was a logical thing to do.

Starting at the top of the hill you quickly realize it's something special.

The lights that shine on the tress change in color from a magenta then gradient to a light yellow.

It really is a gorgeous view.

As you make it about halfway down the hill the patron lamps begin to stand out against the trees.

I think these lanterns are for people who donated money to fund the illumination of the sakura trees as I can't find a temple or shrine anywhere nearby.

Looking back up the hill.

A nice contrast between nature and progress.

Everyone trying to get the right shot.

If you walk a few meters towards the station there is a pedestrian bridge that will give you elevated views of the street show.

It seems this is also a popular spot for people looking to get the best picture.

While it's nice, I prefer to be down on the ground for the best views.

Now that I think about it, there weren't many people at the top of the hill compared to the bottom. I prefer the top of the hill to the bottom because I think the trees are more aesthetic at the top. Also there are less people to interfere with the picture.

In closing, if you happen to be in Shibuya during April you'll be one of the lucky ones like me to see this beautiful sight. Any other time of the year you can enjoy the shade of the sakura trees or try one of the many restaurants on Sakura Hill.

Now that Japan is slowly opening back up you'll have the opportunity come visit. If you are looking for places off the beaten path, I have been writing about sightseeing spots all over Japan for several years and of course I pin it all on Pinmapple.com. These are stunning photos, quite a breathtaking display! I agree that the shots from ground-level are much more splendid that the ones from the bridge! Kudos! 💜

Thank you @thekittygirl. I try, but it helps when the subjects do most of the work setting the scene. It was fantastic to be able to enjoy it all in real life. I hope I did it scene some justice in my presentation.

wow! That is so instgrammable. I imagine it used to be flooded with tourist before lockdown. It's exactly the type of place Asians love.

And btw, here's the link to your Pinmapple profile

Instagram?! Maybe for most, but I put all my content on HIVE only.

It was actually the first time I had been there during the sakura season so I'm not sure how crowded it got before the lockdowns. I do know it can get crowded in winter because they illuminate it around the holidays too. I guess I'll find out though since Japan is opening back up.

Thanks for the link, I added it into the post.

Thanks. Yes, there are huge flower gardens and botanical gardens all over. If that is your interest you should look at the botanical gardens on Enoshima island. It was built by a British gentleman in the late 1800's if I remember correctly.

Woww!!! The scene of the road covered with flowers is amazing, with the purple light effect making it even more special, it's like a painting or scene from a Japanese anime movie. Thank you for sharing such great photos.😍

That makes me wonder if this street has been featured in a movie or anime. I'll have to look into it.

Indeed it is. It is the only street lined with trees like this for miles.

Oh! I didn't know there's such a nice view of sakura in shibuya! I'm one of the unlucky ones. 😐
Well, better luck next year! 😅

Honestly there are sakura all over Tokyo now. I don't remember there being so many 20 years ago. Of course these trees have been there since then, but Miyashita park wasn't there and I don't recall Hachiko having them, but I could be wrong. Right, there's always next year.

I only know the sakura surrounding Hachiko. And yeah there are many sakura in Tokyo but people still flock to the famous areas 😂

Amazing views of the blooming trees. And with so few tourists it definitely feels a lot more magical then expected. Thanks for this :-)

Right. Next year it will probably be full of people making it difficult to get a nice picture. We'll see....

That's so pretty. I wouldn't have thought of adding light to the trees either but it's a smart idea so that people can enjoy them at night. Very cool!

I've always noticed the street in winter because they do illumination during the holidays. I wonder if lighting up the blossoms was born from that?

Hmmm that's a good question 🤔

Very colourful scenery but a bit surreal for me! I prefer blue and green colours!

I wouldn't be surprised if they added holograms to it in a few years. I like it how it is though.

Yup! It’s really nice with lots of pink and purple colours. Hologram would turn this into surrealism!
