San Bernardino alle Ossa in Milan

Hello everyone!

The Church of San Bernardino alle Ossa in Milan is an unusual church. It was built on the site of a medieval cemetery where patients of a nearby hospital were buried. However, it is popular because of its dark part - the ossuary. The church is located in Piazza Santo Stefano in the center of Milan, about 300 m in a straight line from the Cathedral ("Duomo di Milano"). Therefore, you can plan a visit like I did with friends and, while going to see the Cathedral, visit this small church.

Kościół San Bernardino alle Ossa w Mediolanie jest nietypowym kościołem. Powstał na miejscu średniowiecznego cmentarza na którym chowano pacjentów pobliskiego szpitala. Popularny jest natomiast ze względu na swoją mroczną część - ossuarium. Kościół znajduje się przy Piazza Santo Stefano w centrum Mediolanu, ok 300 m w linii prostej od Katedry ("Duomo di Milano"). Zatem można zaplanować zwiedzanie tak jak ja z przyjaciółmi i wybierając się do obejrzenia Katedry przy okazji zwiedzić ten mały kościół.

The church presented in this post is the building visible on the left in the photo above. On the right is the Basilica of Santo Stefano Maggiore in Milan. To reach the ossuary, after entering the church of San Bernardino alle Ossa, turn right. Entry is free.

Przedstawiany w tym poście kościół jest to widoczny budynek po lewej stronie na powyższym zdjęciu. Po prawej znajduje się Bazylika Santo Stefano Maggiore w Mediolanie. Natomiast do ossuarium po wejściu do kościoła San Bernardino alle Ossa, kierujemy się w prawą stronę. Wejście jest darmowe.

The fresco in the ossuary was created in 1695 by Sebastiano Ricci and depicts the Triumph of Souls and Flying Angels. The Blessed Virgin, Saint, is depicted in the corners. Ambrose, St. Sebastian and Saint Bernardine of Siena.

Fresk w ossuarium został stworzony w 1695 roku przez Sebastiano Ricci i przedstawia Triumf dusz i latające anioły. W rogach przedstawiono Najświętszą Dziewicę, św. Ambrożego, św. Sebastiana i św. Bernardyna ze Sieny.

All the walls around the ossuary are decorated with skulls and bones from the cemetery mentioned in the introduction. This decoration was created during the renovation of the church at the end of the 17th century.

Wszystkie ściany dookoła ossuarium ozdobione są czaszkami i kośćmi ze wspomnianego we wstępie cmentarza. Taki wystrój powstał podczas renowacji kościoła pod koniec XVII wieku.

On one of the walls there was a cross made of skulls.

Na jednej ze ścian powstał krzyż ułożony z czaszek.

In one of the niches there is a figure of Our Lady of Sorrows kneeling next to the deceased Jesus.

Natomiast w jednej z nisz umieszczona jest figura Matki Marii Bolesnej klęcząca obok zmarłego Jezusa.

Dwa poniższe zdjęcia wykonałem w przedstawianym kościele, ale poza ossuarium.

Finally, three photos processed in black and white, which should fit well here.

Na koniec trzy zdjęcia w obróbce czarno-białej, która powinna dobrze pasować do tego miejsca.
