When Rulesets Clash: How to Turn the Odds in Your Favor!
Hello, Splinterlands warriors! Welcome to my post.
How’s everyone doing in the middle of the season? Bitcoin and HIVE prices are still struggling to rise amidst the ever-changing global economic situation. But even though things remain unstable, the weekly Splinterlands social media challenge still needs to be answered, right?
This time, I want to share a battle experience where the rulesets created conflicting outcomes and a strategic dilemma. In this match, the active rulesets were Wands Out, Taking Sides, and Counterspell. Among these, Wands Out forces all players to use only magic monsters, while Counterspell punishes magic attacks with reflected damage. So, what’s the best strategy in this situation?

With a 54 mana cap and the available elements being Fire, Water, and Death, I chose Death and used Thaddius Brood as my summoner. Why? Because his ability to reduce the opponent’s magic attack is crucial in countering Counterspell. If an enemy's magic attack is reduced to just 1 point, the reflected damage is also just 1. But if left unchecked, an attack of 2 points would still take 1 reflected damage. So, it’s better to weaken their attack first.
Next, the monster lineup played a key role. I chose magic monsters with high Health Points to ensure they could last longer:
- Insidious Warlock – Placed in the front as a tank due to his Recharge ability, which prevents him from attacking initially.
- Dark Arborist – A solid 2 magic damage attacker.
- Usut – High HP for durability.
- Skok Duskblight – Additional damage dealer.
- Venari Bonesmith – Magic attack plus Poison to drain the enemy’s Health Points.
- Arachne Weaver – With Healing, extending my team’s survivability.
My main strategy was to rely on healing and poison effects to stay in the fight as long as possible while minimizing the impact of Counterspell's reflected damage.
The Battle Begins
My opponent also used the Death element but chose Astral Entity as their summoner. While Resurrect was useful, it didn’t contribute much to their magic monsters.
As the battle unfolded, magic attacks were exchanged back and forth. I gained several key advantages:
- The opponent’s magic damage was reduced thanks to Thaddius Brood.
- Counterspell’s reflected damage was limited to just 1 point, while I was still dealing 2 points of damage.
- Venari Bonesmith’s Poison effect helped speed up the enemy’s Health reduction.
- Arachne Weaver’s Healing allowed my monsters to survive longer.
Although my opponent also used Arachne Weaver, my higher overall attack power and the Poison effect wearing down their Health secured my victory.

Conclusions & Lessons Learned
- Summoner selection is crucial. Thaddius Brood effectively reduced the enemy’s magic attack, which in turn lessened Counterspell’s impact.
- A sustain strategy with healing and poison can be game-changing. Despite reflected damage, healing ensured my monsters stayed in the fight.
- Understanding ruleset interactions is key. While Wands Out forced the use of magic monsters, Counterspell’s effect could be mitigated by choosing the right monsters.
For new players, understanding how rulesets interact with each other can give you a huge advantage. Don’t just look at their individual effects—think about how they work together.
My advice: Don’t be afraid to experiment with unconventional monster combinations. Sometimes, that’s where the best strategies are discovered!
