There are several sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that many people may not be aware of, including:
Pinta: A rare parasitic infection caused by Treponema carateum and characterized by skin discoloration.
Shigellosis: a bacterial infection caused by Shigella that can be transmitted through oral-anal contact, it can cause severe diarrhea and colitis
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) : A viral infection that can cause mild symptoms like cold sores, or no symptoms at all, but can be severe in people with compromised immune systems.
Human Herpes Virus 8 (HHV-8) : A virus that is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma and primary effusion lymphoma which are types of cancer.
Molluscum contagiosum: A viral infection that causes small bumps or warts on the skin and can be transmitted through sexual contact.
Granuloma inguinale: A bacterial infection that causes painless ulcers on the genitals and can lead to severe tissue destruction if left untreated.
Mycoplasma hominis: A bacterial infection that is similar to chlamydia and gonorrhea and can cause symptoms such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
Ureaplasma: A bacterial infection that is similar to Mycoplasma and can cause symptoms such as pelvic inflammatory disease, and infertility.
Donovanosis: A bacterial infection that causes open sores and ulcers on the genitals and can lead to severe tissue destruction if left untreated.
Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV): A bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the lymph nodes and can lead to severe health problems if left untreated.
Chlamydia: A bacterial infection that often has no symptoms, but if left untreated can lead to serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility..
Human papillomavirus (HPV): A viral infection that can cause genital warts and cervical cancer.
Mycoplasma genitalium (MG): A bacterial infection that is caused by Mycoplasma genitalium, it can cause symptoms such as urethritis, and cervicitis, and is often asymptomatic.
Trichomoniasis: A parasitic infection that can cause itching, burning and discharge in women, and is often asymptomatic in men.
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) : A viral infection that causes sores around the genitals,mouth or anus.
Hepatitis B and C: Both are viral infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact and can cause liver damage.
Scabies: A parasitic infection that is caused by a mite and can be transmitted through sexual contact.
Pubic lice (Crabs) : A parasitic infection that is caused by small insects and can be transmitted through sexual contact...
