Introducing "I'm Flash" and "Bobby" [Eng/Esp]

Pets are essential in a home, whether we live alone, as a couple or with children. In the first case they serve us as company, in the second they are a training for our parenting and when we have children they are great teachers that teach our little ones responsibility and love.

En un hogar las mascotas son esenciales, ya sea que vivamos solos, en pareja o con niños. En el primero de los casos nos sirven de compañía, en el segundo vienen siendo un entrenamiento para nuestra faceta de padres y cuando ya tenemos hijos son grandes maestros que les enseñan a nuestros peques de responsabilidad y amor.

Happy #hivepets friends, I hope you had a restful weekend! Today I want to introduce you to two characters that live in our house, and more than company they have been a kind of training for my children. They are two small land turtles (morrocoy as they are known in Venezuela) that were given to my children more than a year ago.

They live upstairs with us because they came home very small and would be easy prey for any rodent and some cats that usually wander through our yard, plus they would surely lose sight of us, because it is a huge place for two little things so small.

In view of that we decided to condition for them a big bowl that we had at home, so we filled it with soil from the yard, some stones to decorate and a container for water and in that place they have about two years.

El día de hoy quiero presentarles a dos personajes que habitan en nuestra casa, y más que compañía han sido una especie de entrenamiento para mis hijos. Se trata de dos pequeñas tortugas terrestres (morrocoy como le conocemos en Venezuela) que le fueron regaladas a mis hijos hace más de un año.

Ellas viven arriba con nosotros pues llegaron muy pequeñas a casa y serían presa fácil de cualquier roedor y de algunos gatos que suelen pasearse por nuestro patio, además que seguramente se nos perderían de vista, pues es un lugar enorme para dos cositas tan pequeñas.

En vista de eso decidimos acondicionar para ellas un bol bastante grande que teníamos en casa, así que lo llenamos con tierra del patio, algunas piedras para decorar y un envase para el agua y en ése lugar tienen cerca de dos años.

Luckily they are growing quite slowly, but in spite of that their comfortable little house is starting to look small and we have been thinking about the possibility of moving them down to the patio.

For this we must enable a small and closed space that allows us to keep them in sight. In addition we must place something to protect them, because I think they are still very small and some animal could hurt them. Their shell still feels soft, especially on the underside. So they will probably be upstairs for a few more months.

In the meantime the children will continue to take them to the yard to sunbathe and to walk more freely.

Por suerte crecen bastante lento, pero a pesar de eso su cómoda casita comienza a lucir pequeña y hemos estado pensando en la posibilidad de bajarlas al patio.

Para ésto debemos habilitar un espacio pequeño y cerrado que nos permita mantenerlas a la vista. Además debemos colocar algo que les sirva de protección, pues considero están muy pequeñas aún y algún animal pudiese lastimarlas. Su caparazón aún se siente suave, sobre todo por la parte de abajo. Así que muy posiblemente estén arriba por unos meses más.

Mientras tanto los niños las seguirán llevando al patio a tomar sol y para
que puedan caminar con más libertad.

These two little ones are named "I am Flash " and "Bobby ".

The first one belongs to my daughter Miranda, who of course was in charge of choosing her name and has the habit of selecting very particular names. In fact she has a doll she named "Elsa Pito "! According to her "I'am" is the first name and "Flash " is her last name. I think she got my craziness!

Surprisingly "I'm Flash " lives up to her name because for a little turtle she is quite fast and when she is taken out to the yard you have to be very attentive because she can get lost in a careless moment.

She has a very different personality from "Bobby " and although it may sound crazy, it is so. "I'm Flash " is much more active than "Bobby " and more adventurous too. Every time they go down to the yard she explores a lot and as soon as she touches the ground she starts walking.

Estas dos pequeñitas tienen por nombre "Soy Flash" y "Bobby".

La primera pertenece a mi hija Miranda, quien por supuesto fue la encargada de escoger su nombre y tiene la costumbre de seleccionar nombres muy particulares. De hecho tiene una muñeca a quien llamó "Elsa Pito"! Según ella "Soy" es el nombre y "Flash" su apellido. Creo que sacó mi locura!

Sorpresivamente "Soy Flash" hace honor a su nombre pues para ser una tortuguita es bastante rápida y cuando la sacan al patio hay que estar muy atentos porque en un descuido se puede perder.

Tiene una personalidad muy diferente a "Bobby" y aunque les pueda parecer locura, es así. "Soy Flash" es mucho más activa que "Bobby" y más aventurera también. Cada vez que bajan al patio explora muchísimo y apenas toca el suelo se larga a caminar.

On the other hand "Bobby " belongs to my son Matías and he has already had several names because he forgets which one he gave him, the last one has been "Bobby " and that's how it will remain, since he wrote it down so he won't forget it! He also looks like me in his absent-mindedness!

"Bobby " is a much quieter tortoise than his sister and is actually very fearful. When he goes to the backyard he hides completely in his shell and while "I'm Flash " explores she stays hidden for quite a while until she decides to come out of hiding.

Despite being bigger, "I am Flash " is the boss! He steals "Bobby's " food and seems to be always looking for trouble, just like human siblings do.

Por su parte "Bobby" pertenece a mi hijo a Matías y ya ha tenido varios nombres pues se le olvida cuál le puso, el último ha sido "Bobby" y así permanecerá, ya que lo anotó para no olvidarlo! El también se parece a mí en lo despistado!

"Bobby" es una tortuga mucho más tranquila que su hermana y de hecho es muy temeroso. Cuando va al patio se esconde por completo en su caparazón y mientras "Soy Flash" explora ella se queda por un buen rato escondida hasta que decide salir de su escondie.

A pesar de ser más grande, "Soy Flash" es quien manda! Le roba la comida a "Bobby" y pareciera siempre estar buscándole problemas, tal cual como suelen hacer los hermanos humanos.

This difference in their personalities seems incredible to me, because although in other pets the personalities of each one come out, I never thought that when it comes to turtles the same thing would happen, but that's how it is. These two sisters can't be any different.

If you notice that I use the feminine gender when talking about them, it is because they are "turtles ", but for now we really don't know the sex of our little ones. That will be later when they are much older.

And for that, it will be enough to look at the lower part of its shell, because in the case of the females it remains flat and in the males it forms a kind of "hollow " that will facilitate the mating between him and the female because he can climb on it, otherwise it would be impossible.

For now, the two little ones are flat, so we have to wait a long time to know their sex, but we are not in a hurry.

A mí ésta diferencia en sus personalidades me parece increíble, porque aunque en otras mascotas las personalidades de cada quien salen a relucir, nunca pensé que al tratarse de tortugas sucediera lo mismo, pero es así. Estas dos hermanas no pueden ser más diferentes.

Si notan que utilizo el género femenino al hablar de ellas es porque se trata de "tortugas", pero realmente por ahora desconocemos el sexo de nuestras pequeñitas. Eso será más adelante cuando estén mucho más grandes.

Y para ello, bastará con mirar la parte inferior de su caparazón, pues en el caso de las hembras permanece planito y en los machos se forma una especie de "hueco" que facilitará el apareamiento entre él y la hembra pues puede trepar sobre ella. De otra manera sería imposible.

Por ahora, las dos peques están planitas, así que toca esperar un bien tiempo para conocer su sexo, pero no tenemos prisa.

I know that turtles are not the most common pets nor the favorite of many, because they do not interact with their humans, but with them my children have learned about the responsibility of having a pet and the care it requires, and although many times I have to be behind them to feed them or put them down, they know perfectly well that their lives depend on them and they act accordingly.

Besides that, they always look for ways to have fun and play with them, even if they are turtles. So they invent "speed " races between "I am Flash " and "Bobby " and encourage their little turtles.

I have no idea if they can feel the affection and love that children and everyone at home give them through care and attention to ensure their welfare and health, but whether they feel it or not, we still have the learning and fun moments, which there are, although you may think not!

Sé que las tortugas no son las mascotas más comunes ni las favoritas de muchos, pues no interactuan con sus humanos, pero con ellas mis hijos han aprendido sobre la responsabilidad que implica tener una mascota y el cuidado que requiere, y aunque muchas veces deba estar detrás de ellos para que las alimenten o las bajen, saben perfectamente que sus vidas dependen de ellos y actúan en consecuencia.

Aparte de eso ellos siempre buscan la manera de divertirse y jugar con ellas, aún cuando de trate de tortugas. Así que se inventan carreras de "velocidad" entre "Soy Flash" y "Bobby" y animan a sus tortuguitas.

No tengo idea si ellas pueden sentir el afecto y cariño que los niños y todos en casa le damos a través de cuidados y atenciones para garantizar su bienestar y salud, pero lo sientan o no, nos queda el aprendizaje y los momentos de diversión, que los hay, aunque puedan pensar que no!
