Buying Things.... With my first spare cash in over a year!
I finally sold my house in Portugal, at a very minor loss but nothing too much to worry about, and it had been on the market for a year, so I was MORE than happy to let it go.
This means I've got some spare cash in the bank for the first time in over a year, some spare cash to buy a few things I've had 'on the list' for that whole year!
First things on the list...
I nipped out a few days ago and bought, get this....
- a bin for the kitchen (been holding off by using a clothes bin as a bin, and just piling the dirty clothes on the floor).
- A drainer for the washing board - lived without one for a year, not a strict necessity, but they do make like easier!
- A butter dish - O.K. this one was a luxury.
- 8 pairs of pants. I was gonna throw away some old ones with a few holes in but I've since decided even these probably have several more wears in them, so a lot of these new pairs will be unused until I need them!
Handily a local cheap budget store was closing down in the high street so I managed to buy all of these things in there, along with a year's supply of bin liners.
Next I bought... FURNITURE!
OFC I probably won't get round to putting it all together for a couple of weeks!
In the picture are:
- 2 sets of shelves for the office, these are decent metal and wood shelving units, about £70 a pop, I wanted to wait until I could get something nice.
- a coffee table - again, around £70 for this, again worth waiting for, it's quite small with storage inside which will help keep things neat.
Next...
- I will get a sit-stand desk and probably a decent chair for the office.
- Some new smart-ish clothes
- Some more running shoes, for mid 2025, I like to be ahead.
- Maybe some walking gear
- Car valet - this is a real cheat, but after 18 months since the last one the car REALLY needs it!
- Maybe a sofa for the living room, I am sick of the futon I'm sitting on RN!
Besides this I am putting everything in savings, eventually I'll need to use some to pay off a loan and a credit card debt, but these are months down the line and I may as well enjoy the greater interest in the meantime!
It's all part of my tight-wad life strategy...
You see I am a bit of a tight-wad when it comes to purchasing consumer durables, and clothes, mainly these two things.
You see my natural inclination is to get as much usage out of these things as I can!
I'd rather live without for months or years knowing I can get the new thing in a short while, rather than buying now impatiently and then probably wanting more and better upgrades as my life regresses over time.
I just think holding off helps keeps one's desires in check and makes it easier to be happier, happier with less!
But I did treat myself tonight...!

House here in my country is a great asset. Most buildings are giving out as short lets and daily income or weekly for the house owner. I believe you sold it at your best decision.
It was a relief to finally sell that is for sure@

Good to see you went for sensible stuff. Always good to buy quality to avoid buying again. It is nice to have a bit of money to spend though. It must be a load off your mind to have sold the house.
It's a relief to have sold and yes the furniture is good quality I'm glad to say!
I also follow this! I am happy with the results.
Enjoy your fish and chips!
Cheers they were good@
Nice. Having assets in a other country than the one you live in is a bit complicated.
Looking forward to fish and chips when I am over in around 2 weeks time.
It's a real treat!
