An 860% return on my Travel Mug (Kind of!)

I've been indulging myself of late with buying a daily take-out coffee. I now always go to my local Hereford coffee shop, the staff share the kitchen in my co-working space and they're a very friendly bunch, and I like the coffee, so I'm in with my daily coffee purchase.

They do this deal where you get double stamps on a loyalty card for using a reusable mug, so I purchased a LARGE ONE, given that I usually go LARGE (better economies of scale!).

I opted for a Hasagie 21OZ as it was long and thin enough to fit in the pockets of my various rucksacks, is pretty leak proof with the lid on, is comfortably a large size (with a cheeky little extra) from my local coffee shop, AND keeps the drink decently warm for a good hour, probably more, but I've never tested it out over a longer period!

This cost just under £17, so let's call it £17 as a Vest...

The returns on double stamps

One coffee costs £3.56 - I get a 12% discount for being a co-worker which helps! And usually one gets a free coffee every 8 stamps....

So (3.56*8) = ONE freebie.

But with a take-out mug that's (3.56*4) = ONE freebie.

If you work this out over the year, or 350 days, then without your own mug you save £142.40 a year, but WITH the take-out mug and double stamps you effectively DOUBLE that saving.

So take one off the other and you end up with....

£142.40 a year based on buying 350 coffees a year.

142.40 is 860% of 17 (the cost of the mug in pounds).

That's likely a MAX return, as I don't buy a coffee EVERY day, but most days.

Obvs not as good as NOT buying coffee out....

But there you go, at this phase in my life I just really enjoy my take-out coffee - it's a local Hereford business, linked to my co-working space and the coffee is great, so I'm happy to support it.

And if one MUST drink take-out coffee, then this take-out mug deal is pretty good!

Why not bringing your coffee with you from home? Not a big deal to make yourself a good coffee for 10% of that cost...

It's insane how much you end up spending on coffee out and about versus making it at home. I lived 4 years in a van having to live on convenience store coffee so I could at least get it under $2 a cup, lol. Since I am on the homestead, oh man, game has changed! LOL. Can't live without my coffee, lol.

Is convenience store coffee any good? I know it's mental paying this much!

In the area I was in, we had a locally owned chain of stores that had some great coffee. But when I didn’t have a Dairy Mart nearby, I would have to go with 7-11 and their coffee sucks, 😂

I had a similar experience when O2, my phone provider, used to give a free drink every week at Neros. I was on a pay as you go contract and I worked out that the free drink and the double points I got for using my own cup complete paid for my phone use costs. It no longer works but it was fun while it did.

Every now and then I decide to cut back on paying for take away coffee but I so far I always go back to it because it's my daily treat I look forward to and, more importantly it gets me out the house for a walk every day.

Ah, how I miss the Nero vibes on O2 Priority. It was a huge bonus!

I think the days of those kind of rewards are gone! It is those daily treats that get you, we've all got our weaknesses!

I only tend to buy coffee if I'm out and about. I ought to carry a cup if only to reduce the waste, but some places give a discount, e.g. the shop at work. I take my Aeropress to the office, but have a travel cup there for when I need it. Coffee can be pretty expensive these days, but then most things are up.

Just by reading your post, now I'm on cravings for a great cup of coffee! Ahahah
For about three weeks ago, I decided to go out of caffeine... The first two days, I felt like a truck had hit me right in my head, and drag me for 10 meteres... But now, three weeks from that decisive moment, I feel more or less "normal". I was feeling that I was depending to much on the coffee, and decided to withdraw it to check if my personal health improves... Well, I know all the studies about brain blood perfusion being increased after caffeine ingestion, but I'm trying to see if I get some extra time of good night sleep by cutting of the coffee, and for the moment i might say that it could be "true" in my case.
Great choice that you made by buying that over sized take-out mug ;)
In Portugal, has you know, the coffee is very small portion "Ristretto",and not an Americano size

I may go that way myself - cutting it out. I am getting more into my herbal teas anyways!

I love those strong short coffees mind!

Keep us posted on how the caffeine detox goes. I know headaches are part of it initially

(Personally I wldve cut down more gradually!)

A friend of mine mentioned Matcha tea (which would have the benefit of keeping the body alert and energized, but without the tremors of coffee and without the gastric symptoms). If I start taking Matcha, I'll share my experience here

This is the most special thing when we have to go on a trip, we have to think about all the expenses first. You have saved some money wisely.
