From Peel to Pleasure: A Guide to Making Irresistible Candied Orange Treats.
Homemade candied orange peel is a delightful treat that combines the natural sweetness of oranges with a sugary glaze, resulting in a burst of citrus flavor with a satisfying chewy texture.
Recently, I decided to try my hand at making candied orange peel, and to my delight, the process was not only simple but incredibly rewarding. In just half an hour, I transformed ordinary orange peels into a decadent confection that the whole family enjoyed.
Let me take you through the step-by-step process of making this delectable treat, which is sure to become a favorite in your home as well.
Step 1: Gather the Ingredients
To make candied orange peel, you will need:
- Oranges
- Sugar
- Orange food color
- Lemon juice
- Water
Step 2: Prepare the Oranges
Start by washing the oranges thoroughly under cold running water to remove any dirt or residue from the peel.
Once you have peeled the oranges, use a spoon or a knife to scrape away any remaining pith from the inside of the peel.
After removing the pith, slice the orange peel into thin strips or any other way you like.
Step 3: Blanch the Peel
To help soften the orange peel and remove any bitterness, sock the peels in cold water for 12-24 hours. Then blanch the strips in boiling water. Bring a pot of water to a boil, then add the orange peel strips and let them cook for about 5 minutes. Drain the peel and rinse it under cold water to stop the cooking process. Repeat the process 3 times.
Step 4: Make the Sugar Syrup
In a separate saucepan, combine equal parts water and granulated sugar to create a simple syrup. For every cup of water, add a cup of sugar.
Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, add a few drops of orange color, and half a cup of lemon juice, and stir occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved.
Step 5: Candying the Orange Peel
Once the sugar syrup is ready, add the blanched orange peel strips to the saucepan. Reduce the heat to low and let the peel simmer in the syrup for about 20 minutes.
Or until the peel becomes translucent and glossy. Stir the peel occasionally to ensure that it is evenly coated in the syrup.
Step 6: Let it Cool
Allow the peel to cool completely before serving or storing.
For an extra touch of sweetness and texture, you can roll the cooled candied orange peel strips in granulated sugar.
I kept the orange candies with the syrup on because I will use them in different desserts later.
Once the candied orange peel has cooled and any optional sugar coating has been added, it's ready to enjoy! Serve the peel as a standalone treat, or use it to garnish desserts such as cakes, cupcakes, or ice cream. The possibilities are endless!
Making homemade candied orange peel is a simple yet satisfying process that yields a deliciously sweet and tangy treat. With just a few basic ingredients and minimal effort, you can create a confection that is sure to impress family and friends alike.
Whether enjoyed on its own or used to enhance your favorite desserts, candied orange peel is a versatile and delightful addition to any kitchen repertoire.
Give it a try and savor the citrusy goodness of this homemade delicacy.
I never try this before but seems so fresh!
You can try it. Orange candied is best for adding on different dessert like milk based sweets, pudding, and even in cakes.
Thanks 😊
Reminds me of a local dessert we call "kalte" here in Bacnotan, La Union that used to be popular when I was a kid. Of which old folks will collect peels from pomelo as well as sweet potatoes and the interior part of a young breadfruit and bring them to a sugarcane processing area to be coated by sugarcane extracts that is being heated into a large carabao driven furnace. Nowadays this method of processing sugarcane has become obsolete.
I know those candied fruits, they are not our local but available in the market. I love the pamelo one.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Wow!!! I didn't know that the skin of an orange could be used like that. Thank you for the idea.
It was my first time as well and I'm not disappointed. You can try it too.
I haven't tried candied orange peel before, but it looks delicious. It is usually being thrown away, so finding ways to eat it can lessen waste. As someone who is pre-diabetic, my only concern is how much sugar seems to be used. I guess it's ok from time to time.
Yes, that's the best thing to turn a wastage in a delicious treat. Thanks :)
I love the colorfulness of this candy, its texture should also be interesting. I've never tried it, I'm going to do it. Thanks for sharing.
