Web 2 Incentives and It’s Limits

Remember when X announced its incentivized program where you get rewarded for tweeting. Sounded really great, because lots of us have been tweeting for free without getting paid. The catch was that you had to verify for Twitter blue and you will be getting some ads revenue generated from interactions in your tweet. I was feeling bad that I didn’t generate enough influence to be able to make money from tweeting. The first month had the whole twitter making we the non influencers feeling bad. The whole twitter that had enough influence to generate revenue from their tweets made a lot of noise about it. Imagine making over $1k from tweeting and spending $8 from Twitter verification blue badge. I thought of ways I could gain more X followers so I can make money from tweeting.

But then, I remembered that X is a web 2 platform, it’s own by one of the biggest capitalists in the world which is Elon Musk, this means that it won’t last, it’s just a way to get more people to join Twitter and make more twitter posts so they can make more money from ads. A month after, the rewarding was changed, to get rewarded on your tweets, you have to not only have Twitter blue verification but your tweets have to have interactions from other Twitter blue verification accounts. This made getting rewarding in X harder, the euphoria and excitement of wanting to earn on Twitter started dying down, people making $1k from Twitter started making way lesser and their interest kind of died. It’s only the people who make money through Twitter influencing that are still taking engagements from the platform really seriously.

What do you expect when it’s centralised and has a CEO who expects to make back his investment plus more. Web 2 is a platform that you have to know that when it’s time to get incentives, the platform will make sure they put their investors first before you the users. Although most of these web 3 platforms are just web 2 masquerading as web 3.
