Moderation and Balanced Diet: Essentials to Healthy Living

Hello to everyone in this wonderful community! It is my pleasure to be here to share my ideas on the ongoing topic for the week: diabetes. As we all know, a wealthy lifestyle cannot be attained if such an individual is not healthy, because only a healthy person both in spirit, soul, and body can attain and sustain a wealthy lifestyle.

In our world today, diabetes is common in both men and women because of the healthy living tips people have forgotten or probably don't take proper note of. Nowadays, we don't eat to live healthily; we rather eat just to fill up our stomachs and satisfy our hunger, which isn't a good way to live a healthy life.

Eating a well-balanced meal helps reduce the circulation and processing of carbohydrates into glucose in the body's system, but we get scared at the mention of a balanced diet because we believe balanced diets are only for the rich; no middle-class or average-living individual can afford to eat a balanced meal daily. A balanced diet must also be taken in the right proportion because too much of it isn't good for health either. Eating large portions of food just because you are hungry doesn't make the food perform its necessary functions in the body. Food should be taken in moderate amounts to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

To avoid being a diabetes patient, except in some cases of hereditary diabetes, foods with a high composition of glucose should be reduced to a minimum. The consumption of substances popularly known as soft drinks also contributes greatly to increasing the sugar level in the human body.

I once had a friend during my college days who felt so comfortable taking sugary drinks; he preferred to take these drinks rather than eat them. It got so bad that he could take six bottles in a day, and anytime I tried to call his attention to it, his reply was always "Nothing will happen, it's not that sugary". He might not know the consequences now, but later in the future, when his body system isn't as strong as in his early days, Then he will be faced with the consequences of his sugar intake, which is diabetes. For this reason, sugary drinks and carbohydrate foods should be reduced in our food intake.

Also, to avoid diabetes, foods with high cholesterol should be drastically reduced. Diabetes damages the lining of the arteries, and this makes it easy for cholesterol to stick to them, which makes them narrow or, in some cases, blocked. Diabetes makes one have lower levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and higher levels of LDL (bad cholesterol). Foods with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy fats, red meat, processed meat, baked foods, and fried foods, should be taken moderately or avoided when necessary.

Regular exercise also helps promote good health. It's not a must that you go to a gym before you keep your body in good shape; exercise doesn't only benefit the physical body but also the inner mind, spirit, and soul. Exercise helps with weight management and controls excessive weight gain.

Excessive intake of alcohol and cigarettes can increase the chances of developing diabetes because tobacco use increases blood sugar levels and leads to insulin resistance. Overstressing your body can also reduce the rate at which the body's systems function, thereby reducing their performance.

It is advisable for people, whether sick or not, to undergo regular medical checkups, such as checking their sugar level, blood pressure, and every other necessary check-up. Diabetes doesn't announce when it's coming, and if proper care isn't taken, it will be too late to control it. Health is wealth; this should be our watchword, and this will help us take good care of our bodies as humans.

Foods like beans, whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and oatmeal are highly recommended for diabetic patients to keep them healthy and control them from getting worst than it is.
