Birthdays are special moments in one's life

Birthdays are one of the things I enjoy celebrating as a lady. Though I haven't celebrated my birthdays for a while now, it's something I love doing. It is an important celebration in one's life; it is remembering the special day one was born.

I enjoyed celebrating my birthdays in childhood because my mom always made sure I celebrated my birthday every year, and that continued until I finished primary school. When I gained admission to junior secondary school, I didn't celebrate it as usual; it was just like any other day anytime I celebrated my birthday, and that made me take my mind off celebrating it the way I used to back then.

I've met people who told me they don't like celebrating birthdays. I wonder why one would not love to celebrate his or her existence on earth. Well, everyone has their reasons for their decisions.

Just as I don't expect to celebrate it every year, one of my best birthday celebrations ever was my birthday three years ago. I woke up just like any other day, and I was going about my daily activities when I heard a knock on my door. I wasn't expecting anyone or a gift from anyone.

My parents had called me earlier with that money and wished me well, as had some of my friends. I left what I was doing and hurried to open the door. There stood my younger sister with a box of cake, a frame, and other wrapped gifts. I was surprised as I stood for a moment admiring the things she was holding.

I was surprised to see her because she had called me early that morning to wish me well, and she didn't mention that she would be coming. She dropped all she came with and hugged me. I was so elated and happy. It was the best birthday for me because I was happy that someone whom I didn't expect could plan so much for me in her way, and it was something I appreciated so much.

I enjoyed the cake and other gifts she bought, and to date, I have kept the frame in good shape because it reminds me of her kind gesture towards me. What made the birthday special wasn't the gifts, but the intention behind the gifts.

I believe birthdays are reflections of how we live our lives; each year comes with its peculiarities, and our achievements yearly speak much about how we are making good use of every year we celebrate. It's not right to live life for living's sake, make good use of every year, and find purpose in life.

Each birthday celebrated is a pointer to mistakes made in previous years that shouldn't be repeated in the next year. It is also a pointer to hope when there is life because a failure doesn't mean the end of life; it's just a correctional factor that you can do more by trying again and not giving up easily.
