A look at the Student's Place (Eng/Esp)

In my walks through the city of Cumaná, Sucre state - Venezuela, I stop at places I had not seen before or that I do not know about their origins, such as the squares. These places of recreation are usually interesting when you investigate their history and their relationship with the culture of our territory. And it is that when investigating events or anecdotes that deserve to be unveiled appear.

En mis paseos por la ciudad de Cumaná, estado Sucre - Venezuela, me detengo en lugares que no había visto antes o que desconozco sobre sus orígenes, tales como las plazas. Estos sitios de esparcimiento suelen ser interesantes cuando se indaga en su historia y su relación con la cultura de nuestro territorio. Y es que al investigar aparecen acontecimientos o anécdotas que merecen ser develadas.

On this occasion, I was on Mariño Street and I wanted to walk through the square behind the “Ginan” shopping center, this place is known as Plaza del Estudiante (Student's Square). Although I had seen it several times, this is the first time I focused on knowing its origins. My curiosity began by finding out why this name and whose bust stands out in its center. Looking for information I found out that the image belongs to Armando Zuloaga Blanco, a martyr of the resistance against the dictatorship of Juan Vicente Gómez.

En esta ocasión, me encontraba en la Calle Mariño y quise transitar por la plaza que está detrás del C.C. "Ginan", tal sitio es conocido como Plaza del Estudiante. Aunque lo había visto varias veces, esta es la primera vez que me enfoco en conocer sus orígenes. Mi curiosidad empezó por averiguar el por qué de este nombre y de quién era el busto que destaca en su centro. Buscando información me enteré que la imagen pertenece a Armando Zuloaga Blanco, un mártir de la resistencia contra la dictadura de Juan Vicente Gómez.

This bust arrived to the place many years after it was baptized as Student's Square, which happened in 1962, when the locals suggested to the authorities to name it that way because both children and young university students used to meet there every afternoon to read, exchange knowledge and do their academic homework.

Este busto llegó al lugar muchos años después que fue bautizado como Plaza del Estudiante, lo que ocurrió en 1962, cuando los lugareños sugirieron a las autoridades colocarle ese nombre porque tanto niños como jóvenes universitarios se reunían allí cada tardes para leer, intercambiar conocimientos y realizar sus deberes académicos.

Although it is no longer used for these purposes, the Plaza del Estudiante continues to be an emblematic and significant space for the people of Cuman. As for the bust of Armando Zuloaga Blanco, it represents a tribute to a young man from Cuman who began his law studies at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and became a member of the board of directors of the Student Federation, later he was imprisoned for his ideas, considered subversive by the dictatorship of the time. After his freedom, Zuloaga Blanco participated in the Falke Expedition, where he was killed by Gomecistas soldiers on the banks of the Manzanares River, becoming the first martyr of the Generation of '28.

A pesar de que en la actualidad ya no se usa con esos fines, la Plaza del Estudiante continúa siendo espacio emblemático y significativo para los cumaneses. En cuanto al busto de Armando Zuloaga Blanco representa un homenaje a quien en vida fue un destacado joven cumanés que inició la carrera de Derecho en la Universidad Central de Venezuela y llegó a la directiva de la Federación de Estudiantes, posteriormente, fue encarcelado por sus ideas, consideradas subversivas por la dictadura de entonces. Tras su libertad, Zuloaga Blanco participó en La Expedición del Falke, allí fue muerto por soldados gomecistas, a orillas del Río Manzanares, convirtiéndose en el primer mártir de la Generación del 28.

From the Plaza del Estudiante you can contemplate the effervescence of downtown Cumana, its location is between the two commercial pillars of the city, the municipal market and the most important stores in the region. Although the daily life is usually bustling during much of the day, in the evenings you can feel tranquility, at least I could enjoy it while I was there. I always stop to observe nature in all its splendor, its trees, plants and flowers are a visual spectacle.

Desde la Plaza del Estudiante se puede contemplar la efervescencia del centro de Cumaná, su ubicación está entre los dos pilares comerciales de la ciudad, el mercado municipal y las tiendas más importantes de la región. Si bien la cotidianidad suele ser bulliciosa durante gran parte del día, en las tardes se puede sentir tranquilidad, al menos la pude disfrutar mientras estuve allí. Siempre me detengo a observar a la naturaleza en todo su esplendor, sus árboles, plantas y flores son un espectáculo visual.

In the square we can find leafy trees that offer us their shade to rest peacefully in a busy day. There are also several benches arranged around the bust of Zuloaga to chat for a while while sharing a snack. This place is usually a convergence point for some gatherings, especially for students. Undoubtedly, a place of recreation and entertainment.

En la plaza podemos encontrar frondosos árboles que nos ofrecen su sombra para reposar plácidamente en un día ajetreado. También hay diversos bancos dispuestos alrededor del busto de Zuloaga para platicar un rato mientras se comparte algún snack. Este lugar suele ser un punto de convergencia para algunas concentraciones, sobre todo, de carácter estudiantil. Sin duda, un lugar de esparcimiento y entretenimiento.

I spent a good time in the Plaza del Estudiante, what I liked most, besides resting in a natural environment, was to learn about the origins of the place and the history of Zuluaga Blanco, aspects that I did not know because, to tell the truth, the custom is usually to honor military men when it comes to placing busts in public places.

Pasé un buen rato en la Plaza del Estudiante, lo que más me gustó, además de descansar en un ambiente natural, fue aprender sobre los orígenes del lugar y la historia de Zuluaga Blanco, aspectos que desconocía porque, a decir verdad, la costumbre suele ser honrar a militares cuando se trata de colocar bustos en sitios públicos.
