Sweet Watercolor Memories - San Antonio (The Dude Abides)

I've got to be honest, San Antonio wasn't my favourite place in Ibiza. Although as can be seen in the title image it is a fantastic town to people watch.

I'm a quiet nature lover at heart, and the only wildlife to observe around the streets/bars of San Antonio is the pissed-up, puking, fighting and lairy type.

Wait a minute, I have to give credit where credit is due, we did have one amazing night where we ate a massive fresh fish feast (very obviously the day's catch) and then danced until 2 am at Cafe Del Mar after watching a magical Sunset.

The title picture in this post pretty much sums up what we were doing in San Antonio, it was a base to explore the island, a cheap-ish apartment from which we could drive our hire car out each day to reccy possible sights for a writers' retreat business that my friend had secured investment to set up (that is her you can see in the background laughing at my amazingly funny jokes 😉).

The one over-ridding memory I have of my time in San Antonio though is that on the days we decided to just hang around in the city, checking out the millionaire's boats moored up and the more chilled hippie vibe bars that you could find with a little searching, a White Russian cocktail never left my hand.

With my somewhat raggedy shorts and various t-shirts, I sported each day (it was late spring after all and this pasty Brit was lube’d up with sun lotion to the max😂) and my perpetual White Russian in hand I soon got noticed and labelled The Dude.

If you've never seen The Big Lebowski I seriously worry about you 😉 I've linked the Wikipedia page about the film above if you're interested in reading more, but the basic premise is that the main character (a somewhat washed-out hippie) played by Jeff Bridges gets himself into increasingly ridiculous situations trying to deliver a million dollars to the kidnappers of an old man's (who's 2nd name is also Lebowski) trophy wife.

There is a lot more to the film, and John Goodman plays his insane ex-Vietnam Veteran friend so well, there are seriously so many LOL moments in that film... but wait a minute... I'm entering serious spoiler-alert territory here.

So let's get back to my tale of San Antonio.

Out of two weeks staying in Ibiza we must have spent only four days in San Antonio. But I remember that magical moment when I realised I had solidified some type of odd notoriety/fame when while lying on the beach, I lifted my straw hat to reveal my White Russian... still with a few un-melted blocks keeping it icy cool, I took a sip and as a shadow eclipsed the sun.

I squinted up to see who had stolen my rays and David Guetta looked down at me and said...

"Dude... you're the Dude. People have been telling me there is a mad Scouser wandering around town with a white Russian in his hand and I didn't believe them."

I have to admit I didn't know who the fck David Guetta was at the time as I've never been much of a fan of commercial pop/dance music. But I gave him a thumbs up, took a sip of my White Russian and as he wandered off I heard him say.

"The dude abides, the dude abides" with an incredulous chuckle.
