They Finally Ate Chickens.
Margaret and her two sons lived in poverty for so many years. They lived in a one bedroom and they could barely afford the things they want or the basic things that we need in life.
She’s supposed to have a husband, right? The young man died many years ago when he was coming back home from work. He had a fatal accident which led to his immediate death. This is why Margaret is so lonely with her two children struggling to eat and go to school every day.
She could not afford to give them the normal three square meal so they either eat once a day or twice a day.
Even though they were not cool with it, they had to get used to it because there was no way they could get more food.
One day, one of her sons asked her why they don’t get to eat chicken. She said;
Three people from your family died after eating chicken and we do not want such thing to happen in the family again.
It felt like a reasonable idea but that was just a lie. Margaret could not afford to buy chicken for her kids not even on their birthdays so she had to bring up that lie. After she said that, she went inside to cry. She almost cried her eyes out that night. It feels very sad when you’re not able to afford what your child wants.
She kept on struggling to feed her kids and they don’t get to eat something reasonable everyday.
Even if someone offers those kids chicken outside, they’d say;
We don’t eat chicken in my family. We have been prohibited for eating chicken.
This has been the mentality of these kids and even when they go out, they tell people the same thing that they don’t eat chicken.
A lot of people wondered if it is ever possible to eat chicken and die but different people have their family beliefs so it might be possible for such thing to exist.
When the two boys gained admission into the university, their mother found it hard to pay their school fees so they got a job. They began to work in a restaurant and they mostly get to eat the left overs of those who come to the restaurant.
They sell meat, fish and all but people who come there mostly want to eat chicken or turkey and they had no other choice than to eat it.
At first, they were very scared but they just had to because they were left with no choice.
On the first night that they were about to eat the chicken, they were really scared of death but there was no other thing to eat. These boys prayed for about twenty minutes before eating and they were expecting themselves to die that night but it didn’t happen.
They woke up healthily the next day and that was how they started to eat chicken. They even fell in love with it and ate it almost everyday. They still believed in the superstition but maybe they felt they broke the jinx.
After their education, the kids got good jobs in big companies because they were brilliant and very lucky. They made it big and built houses and had cars of their own.
One day, their mother called them that she has a secret she’d love to reveal. She called them and said;
My sons, I know I told you not to ever eat chickens because it is a taboo to eat chicken in your family. That was a lie. I didn’t have enough funds to buy chickens for you when you were small knowing fully well that you were always craving chicken back then. I may not be the best mother but all I did was made sure that we all survived during those tough times. I’m sorry if you ever feel offended but I did what a good mother was supposed to do so you people don’t get to beg from your friends.
The two men were shocked and they also thanked their mother for the proper upbringing and taking care of them even though their father was not alive. She did it single-handedly.
They were glad so they all went for a chicken date at that night and they all ate chickens to the fullest.
Ever since that day, they fell more in love with chickens but the boys never told their mother that they used to eat chickens when they were at the University.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry with this story!!!! It was clever of the mother to invent that superstition, but it is also sad why she did it. And to think that in reality there must be many people who don't eat chicken not because they shouldn't, but because they can't afford it. Greetings
I’m glad you got the point
Thank goodness this is fiction although it might be a reality for someone elsewhere. It's quite sad but I love that the story ended in a good note :)
I’m glad you loved the story!
Your story was both sad and funny! I mean I totally relate with this one—but unlike the chicken superstition part, mine was about pork. My mother said before that pork is bad for us that's why we avoid eating it—well it's kinda true, but unlike the boys, I'm aware that we're broke, so I just go along with my mother's trick (I don't know if my other siblings was aware also). I'm glad that it ended well for them, and I hope someday it'll end well for us. Thanks for sharing such a touching story @rafzat! I really enjoyed reading it.
Good day!
It will surely end well for you too
Thanks @rafzat, yeah... someday!
Raising kids as the only surviving parent can be a lot to handle, I can totally relate.
I'm glad they were all able to find their way and won't be repeating the same suffering with their own kids.
I feel if I was the young men, I would have eaten chicken too in the university 😋
Thank you for sharing.
