Are They Still Saving Lives?

Doctors are not only supposed to be people who treat others to make them feel better. Doctors are life savers, they are caregivers, they are health givers if there is a word like that.
Doctors are meant to be caring and always wanting to make sure they save lives. Sadly, I’ve seen cases where doctors always want some money before they can begin to treat an emergency patient. It’s not bad and I’m not complaining but I always feel they should at least help them with a form of first aid. I would not like to speak for every part of the world. I’d just speak for Nigeria. I’ve lived all my life here and I know how things are.
Even in general hospitals that belongs to the government, they always want money before they treat you. The government didn’t send them to do that but that’s the situation of things.
I’m not complaining but it may be bad for those who need immediate attention and there may be no money take care of them.

Today, I read a news on X, stating that doctors in Nigeria will now have to see a police report before treating gunshot or sharp object cases like machete and so on. How do you see this news? If you feel it isn’t bad, I agree with you but for a reasonable Nigerian, it is bad. Why did I say so? It’s bad because getting a police report here in Nigeria can be very stressful. Some of these policemen will even arrest you if you stress them too much. It can be very funny but it’s just the truth.
Basically everything in this country is stressful so getting that report is stressful too and you may spend more that hours before you get the police report but what happens to the patient? Will he or she lose her life?
Last November, my family and I got robbed. They shot at us and the gun almost hit my dad’s heart but we were safe. Let’s imagine if the gun had hit him and we were asked to bring a police report at the hospital, how do we do it? Just think about that and imagine so many people who must have lost their lives because of issues like this. It can be very unfair.

I’ve read stories about so many people who have lost their lives due to delay in police report and those doctors won’t even try to provide them a means of first aid if that’s the highest thing they could do at that moment.
I feel doctors are supposed to be life savers but why will they be so cruel to see someone who might lose his life any moment from that time and tell the person to provide a police report.
It’s bad. Now that I’ve explained the situation of things in Nigeria, do you support this motion that doctors have raised or are you against it?

Let me know in the comments section.

I think the police report is so they can differentiate the victims from the criminals...

is it that your area is not safe? cos this is the second time I read your post about your family getting robbed or is it same one? you should change environment if it is not safe there

The way we see it is the following.
A person can't be a doctor and get his/her license before taking the Hippocratic Oath!
Among other things, the Hippocratic Oath says,

"With regard to healing the sick, I will devise and order for them the best diet, according to my judgment and means; and I will take care that they suffer no hurt or damage."

If they (the doctors) don't help the patient and administer their knowledge or avoid doing so for whatever reason, they are actually hurting that patient and causing damage.

Furthermore, the same Hippocratic Oath also says,

"Whatsoever house I may enter, my visit shall be for the convenience and advantage of the patient; and I will willingly refrain from doing any injury or wrong from falsehood, and (in an especial manner) from acts of an amorous nature, whatever may be the rank of those who it may be my duty to cure, whether mistress or servant, bond or free."

In other words, it's not their job or duty to judge the person due to his/her social, economic, religious, racial, or national status or even less to distinguish the victims from the criminals. They (the doctors) should provide their service equally to the king and servant, bond and free.

So, from our perspective, if they do not do so and act contrary to the oath taken, they are actually breaking the oath in its core purpose and meaning and thereby losing their doctoral title and status. As such, they should be reported to the local doctoral chamber, board of medicine, medical council, and/or the ministry with the request to revoke their licenses and to lose the so-called Certificate of good standing.
