Fish-eying through the Kamennoostrovsky avenue from morning to midnight (with a solid break for office duties and coffee) - visual story in 18 photos
This week I wanted to refresh myself - and I dusted off my manual Zenitar 16mm fisheye lens. It certainly has many downsides, but on the other hand there are also several undeniable advantages (which together make up the notorious dialectical unity, hehe). In general, on the one hand I am afraid to use it and prefer other lenses - simply because the result is usually "without a guarantee" and disappointing, in terms of quality. But on the other hand, the process itself... I really like using the Zenitar 16mm, and some cases simply require it to be in the backpack on my back (for example, when it comes to photographing the interior of a very compact, tight space; or if you need to photograph a huge building - and the opportunity to move away to the required distance to see the entire scale does not present itself due to objective limitations of the location).
There is an intresting residential building I pass by on my way to office, located at Kamennoostrovsky prospect. It implemented the Ar-Nuovo style and look very unique - a real eye-catcher. The parade arch gate has these architectural ornate elements that look great in photos, especially black and white ones.
The problem is the size. One cannot create a full-scale image of the building being close - and coming out at a distance is nearly impossible. Tilt-shift lens maybe come as a help, idk. I tried to utilize my 16mm fisheye lens, the result is at your eyes. What will you say?
I hardly imagine how one can shoot this object without using fish-eye and its distortions. The room is too packed!
I like to shoot fancy door design, did you know that? The building has some doors of spectacular design on its parade front side (inner yard has a simple ones). I cant say for sure if they are original or not; probably it 's some replica created nowadays. But still pretty enjoyable visually.
That was all; I completed my mission and got it captured - actually, this was the initial reason to shake off the dust from my fish-eye and take it for a walk. But of course, when it is already attached - I have massive fun, and dont want to change it! (Well, until I am back at home and examining the results... which most of time upset me, one way or another).
So, I continued the walk and looked out for more stuff to capture.
The bridge over Karpovka river. The picture is very very very different to the usual visuals I can get using my 70-200mm telephoto lens. The images turn blurry and have poor detalization - impossible to put the correct focus point manually, but still, I like the picture.
Someone trusted me to hold his coffee, while he admired the view and forgot about everything, including his coffee... Just kidding! In fact, this stranger was just too lazy and frivolous to save his cup and throw it in the nearest trash can. A clean city is not one in which street cleaners do their job well, but one in which the city's inhabitants do not throw trash under their feet :(
The sculpture "Friendship", which local pigeons appreciate a lot.
On my way back home it was already a very late and dark evening - and I ventured into what I call 'available photography'.
A motorcycle that I've been seeing in the same spot for several days now. Apparently, the owner is waiting for the snow to melt (soon it happen!), and won't ride it until then.
These two gates (aka Propileus) are very, very, very wide. The mission to shoot both of them at once is not an easy task to perform.

Thanks for walking with me!

Images taken with great taste and sense of composition. Hope to see more Zenitar 16mm posts in your blog. The city is actually perfect for such photography.
The bridge over Karpovka river is my favorite one.
Grazie! Happy to receive such a comment from a PRO cameraman.

I definitely continue taking shots with this magic lens.
Tho it has some sufficient contras for me, which stimulate me -- to use other lens on everyday basis. So, this one is kinda a refreshment for me, my perception and photo process, from time to time. PS - I plan to slip in the Rotonda house one day (on Gorokhovaya street), and take shoots there.
Have you been there, inside?
Never been but I heard about it.
I have a 24mm (small, old, metal, made in Japan, a secondhand), quite wide on full frame (but not as much as yours Zenitar), and that's my way of refreshment. And a challenge!
I've read 24mm is a perfect, ideal wide angle to enjoy (especially when it is 2.8 or less). In particular, i've read that such Canon lens is considered to be one of top-10 lens (at least according to one such rating). 🐈

2.8 works great; old but good.
Excellent work, when I had my old camera setup, I had a fisheye lens and used it much more than I thought I would, your post has reminded me to get another fisheye lens now.
Yes, true. Using it so much fun! refreshes the visual side of things that you used to. (Or.. simply an unhealthy addiction to a wide-angle-distortions? lol).
Glad to entertain you and (unwillingly) to bring good memories. Sending Hive !BEER your way. 😎

Those are great pictures. I didn’t use my fish eye lens a lot. Now you gave me an incentive to find it, dust it of and trying some new things. Thank you 🤩
Me too. It doesnt give good technical quality to the captures (which I found important to me) and totally manual.. like a game of random! But it is a solid pleasure, so why not to play with it for fun from time to time? Just - one have to be prepared for the possible consequences, haha! ...and do not borrow it to carry out important commercial orders... 😉

Oh no I wouldn’t for commercial work 😉 but it is always fun to play. When I got bored in my profession, someone told me to use one single lens to do my work, so I chose the 50 mm. When you do it as a professional, you forget to play. I understood that really fast
Great choice! I totally agree, I could be that person to recommend 50mm too.
I am a fan of this lens xD ideal to shoot kids, very helpful and sufficient for object photography (and capable of doing macro with adding macro coils), high aperture, not expensive, pretty universal. (I went from Canon 1.8 to Canon 1.4 and stopped being a happy owner of Sigma 1.4). Btw I am not a pro cameraman (tho I'd love to!) 😎
I didn’t start out as a pro, I had to show my portfolio to study it, and when you begin.. you are not a pro either. After 25 years I can say I am 😉

Beautiful place, beautiful building, beautiful sculptures, plus the snow makes it so perfect. enjoy and be safe my dear.
Those doors really are cool! Such beautiful architecture and a nice walk, although it looks a little on the cold side! That river view is a nice picture, I agree. Lots of snow still, I do hope spring is sneaking it's way in there and that winter is on it's way out!
