Three Tune Tuesday #147 .:. Adventures in monochrome land

Hi there, my dear friends! For this #ttt week I prepared a bouquet of very different stuff. The names are well-known: Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, Bjork. All this is mainstream, nothing hidden under surface. Still, I hope the post may help someone open their eyes wider to our recent musical past. The stuff is pretty different... Criteria that bring it together? mostly it is the artistic visual side: monochrome, slow-mo. I recommend to watch carefully paying attention to all the little details in the video, you will not regret.

Led Zeppelin - Boogie with stu

(official video; from «Physical graffiti» LP, 1974)

There are no deep hidden meanings here, just some good choreography, plastic... and humor. One of the best Zeppelin songs from my favorite album of theirs. 1974 also is one of my fave years - although '72 I prefer even better.

Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)

(official video; from «The Bends» LP, 1995)

Initially this band from Oxford, UK became popular in US and all over the world for their hit song 'Creep'. For a long while British music press hated the band and described it as 'a pitiful, lily-livered excuse for a rock'n'roll group'. Later Radiohead have proved many times they have much more to suggest; this video was directed by Jonathan Glazer for the 5th single to their 2nd album, and did a lot for boosting Radiohead popularity in their own land. The song topped UK-charts with #5, and the video itself looks like a monochrome poem, and claims to be the best band's music video ever. The video was filmed in the pre-dawn hours near Los Angeles, and the slow-motion cameras acting as the main characters of the movie.

Bjork - Big Time Sensuality

(official video; «Debut» LP, 1993)

This is one of my very fave videos of all time, in any way. No surprise, cause it is a gorgeous example of monochrome, minimalism, plus a beautiful girl in the frame, plus the sense of freedom and living on the edge... and besides that - its New Yorke, baby! a Big Apple!

Shot in October 1993 by the director Stéphane Sednaoui, video received heavy rotation on MTV and boosted Bjork's fame at North America a lot. Sednaoui previously had directed videos for Madonna, U2, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Initially he considered shooting it at Iceland, but budget did not allow that, so they went minimalistic (for the better). The video displays Björk dancing at the back of a truck slowly drifting through New York City, and built upon using such film effects as slow motion / fast motion. Of course, Bjork's unique personality came out to the front, in a very minimalistic way, and became the core of the video. (Also there exist a rare 'night version', but the daylight one worked better).

These details Bjork remembered about the video shoot:

"I had seen the Red Hot Chili Peppers video that [he] did, sort of black and white and silver, and I wanted [him] to do a video to my song ... I was very aware that I want it to be quite different from 'Human Behaviour', which is more sort of epic story-telling thing. 'Big Time Sensuality' was more like a personal statement, it has to be very in-your-face. Then he called up, a little later, with something he thought was even better, basically to get a truck and drive up and down Manhattan as long as the light would last. I guess the idea to put someone on a truck, and kinda drive the truck, and you have to dance really intensely, and just the elements of danger at the top of that, do it in a city like New York. I think the policeman, very aggressive, asking us to stop ... we were kinda like anarchists not stopping, the police were after us. Then, you get all those people who actually want to jump on the truck and take part, like: "Are you doing a movie? Can I take part?" We had very big speakers and were blasting the song, everybody was kinda listening, and you know how New York people are, they're very sort of open anyway, they were clapping and dancing along, it was a bit of a performance statement. It was a great day, we had great laughs". (from Björk's interview about the videoshoot)

Lucky we to have this stuff! Nowadays 'They don't do it like that anymore! Hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday challenge run by @ablaze.
