Three Tune Tuesday #142 .:. hurdy-gurdy

My #ttt blog today will not be focused as usual on a certain band or genre or a song history - I decided to introduce to you a pretty strange music device. Have you ever heard about a Hurdy-Gurdy, also known as 'wheel harp'? (Почти что хурда-мурда!)

This musical instrument is pretty old, even ancient, been known since the XII century. Basically, it is a cello 'with an endless bow'. The handle that is being rotated in the videos, serves as a bow, and the keys when pressed, pinch the strings, just like the fingers of a living violinist do. One may call this instrument 'a lazy violin'. Of course, such an instrument offers a simplified range of sound compared to a violin - but still: it is deep, analog, natural violin sound. Look in a few videos below what soundscape Hurdy-Gurdy is capable to produce; a solo player turns into one-man orchestra!

Sweet Dreams (Hurdy Gurdy cover)

(official video; from 'Shapes & Patterns' EP)

Might be the most raw, dramatic, darn energy cover of this song I ever heard. Memorable!

Guilhem Desq - Omen

It reminds me of an organ, bagpipes, or horns leading troops to attack a medieval castle. If you enjoyed music of this kind, check out Guilhem Desq's YT channel - it has some magical videos!

Rammstein riffs on Hurdy Gurdy

System of a Down' riffs on Hurdy Gurdy

Just imagine: a full band playing metal music... a singer, drummer, and three hurdy gurdiers?!! They will totally destroy the minds of their audience.

And the last but not the least: this ancient instrument easily can be found and obtained! (Well, maybe not at every musical shop, but still). Electrical versions are produced, too.

Hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday challenge run by @ablaze. I have never even heard of a Hurdy Gurdy, that is pretty awesome. It can produce all sorts of interesting sounds and even do a riff. Maybe not as well as Van Halen but who is? That would be interesting to see a metal band incorporate one! Very cool find!

Lets raise awareness about it -- so that in the future, more metal bands may use it in the arrangements!

I knew of this instrument, but you don't see them very often. There's some similarities to bagpipes with the drone notes to fill out the sound. People have been making music for a long time and they could be innovative. That last one sounds like a cello.

I havent encountered it live even once (unlike a bagpipe, which nowadays is not that common too...) might be fantastic experience to touch and try it - at least, now I will look out for these at a musical shops.

I love this instrument! I recognized the sound from various medieval music, authentic or inspired, and it sounds fantastic! And I agree, playing metal rifs on it adds a certain special touch to it. Now I feel like looking for more hurdy-gurdy tunes.

Its a special pleasure to know where which sound comes from. I still remember how I was excited when I noticed Theremin at the 'Tiger Lillies' gig here, at St.Petersburg. And hurdy-gurdy, I had not a slightest idea.. now I am in the know and looking forward, maybe one day I see it even at the streets?
