New Vinyl: 80s Electro-Funk, Disco, 70s Soul and 80s Psych Trash
(Edited)
This weekend, the radio station that I DJ at threw a decent sized record fair at a local bowling alley. I walked away with about half a crate of wax and a small stack of compact discs... I think I spent about $55. I think I ended up with a little something for everyone...or perhaps nothing for nobody. Should be a fun radio show this week! Here is a small sampling of some of the goodies:
Shango
"Shango Message"
1983
Here is some early mid 80s electro-funk produced by Afrika Bambaataa and Bill Laswell, two folks who are very well known in their field. This was from that magical time in the 80s when the avant punk rockers, free jazz and world musicians would be on the same releases as that new fangled HIP HOP sound!...Celluloid was a pretty interesting label.
B.A.L.L
"Trouble Doll"
1989
Here's a Shimmy Disc release from the late 80s...I guess a "supergroup" of sorts, featuring Don Fleming from half japanese etc., Kramer from bongwater, shockabilly etc., Jay Spiegel from gumball, Dave Rick from King Missile, etc. and David's Licht from bongwater and shockabilly. Phew. I was actually unfamiliar with this group, but I will give this one an attentive listen.
Claudia Barry
"Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes"
1978
I already had this classic disco single, but was unfamiliar with the full length album, so I had to grab it for a buck when I saw it. Hopefully there are more undiscovered good cuts to be heard on the LP. Gotta love that electronic laser space drum in the mix!
Eddie Kendricks
1971
I didn't know this guy, but I spotted the Kenny Rogers "Something's Burning" cover and I just had to snag it up... Even though he somehow manages to out-smooth Kenny in his rendition... And take the psychedelic tinge out of the mix-they can't all be barn burners, I guess. Will check out the rest of the record soon.
Thanks for reading, I hope you liked my post!
