Visiting Jatiluwih at the Early Rice Plantation

I visited Jatiluwih village at about 1,300 meters above sea level, known for its beautiful rice terraces in Bali. From there, I had a stunning view of the surrounding landscape, including Mount Agung at 3,142 meters and Mount Batu Karu at 2,700 meters.

The rice fields in Jatiluwih were in the plowing stage, with water everywhere and no rice plants yet. The road was a bit crowded, with many visitors—foreign tourists and locals alike—enjoying the view.

I visited the monument of the UNESCO site, where Jatiluwih is recognized for its unique irrigation system called SUBAK. SUBAK is an organization of farmers who share resources, water, and participate in spiritual activities at the SUBAK temple, worshipping the goddess of rice. This cooperative system is why Jatiluwih has earned its UNESCO status.

As I wandered along the road, I walked into a small rice field path between the high terraces. From there, I saw rice fields stretching out as far as I could see, a full 360 degrees around me. Most of the fields were still filled with water, preparing for the planting stage.

After exploring the rice field path, I returned to the main road and decided it was time to conclude my visit. With a sense of fulfillment, I made my way back to where I started, reflecting on the natural beauty and cultural richness of Jatiluwih village.

The rice terraces, still in their early stages, mirrored the tranquil atmosphere of this UNESCO-recognized site. The blend of bustling crowds and serene landscapes offered a unique experience, highlighting the cooperative spirit of SUBAK and the reverence for rice cultivation.

Jatiluwih's charm lies not just in its scenic vistas but also in its vibrant community and cultural heritage.
