Spanish Colonization Coin (Queen Isabel II)
If you google Philippine History, most of its result would bring you back to 1521 from the time when a Portuguese explorer Ferdinan Magellan step foot onshore in Limasawa island, one of the many beatiful islands of this archipelagic nation. It is the first recorded European visit.
Back then, there was no one nation called Philippines it was only after 44 years when another spanish explorer named Ruy Lòpez de Villalobos commissioned by the king of Spain to establish a strong foothold in the islands and gave name to the the islands Las Islas Filipinas in honor of Philip of Austria the Prince of Asturias who later became King Philip II King of Spain.
This is an 1850 8 Maravedis during the reign of Queen Isabel II. As a colonized country of Spain, we used the same currency up until the americans acquired Philippines in the aftermath of the Spainish - American War during 1898.

A lovely example of a bronze 8 Maravedis with plenty of great detail, I have an older Alfonso version but fairly worn from lots of circulation.
Alfonsos both father and son were fave to collect. My journey to silver coin collection started with Alfonso XIII a 1888 5 pesetas
