Special task

The Levites ... shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it and camp around the tabernacle.

Text: Numbers 1:50.

The tribe of the Levites had a privileged place among the people of God. God had sanctified them for Himself. Their assignment stood in connection with the tabernacle, God’s dwelling among His people. This tent, which could be dismantled, had to accompany the people on their wilderness journey. _One of the most important tasks of the Levites was to carry the tabernacle and its furnishings.

All that is written in the Old Testament is intended as an example for our learning. Nowadays the Church is God’s testimony on earth. It is His house. Like Israel, the Church, i.e. the entire company of all God’s children, is on a long journey through the ages. Eternity with the Lord and glory are still ahead of us. We are in the “wilderness”. Here we are called upon to bear the testimony for God. Every believer is a Levite. Are you playing your part?

The Levites descended from three families. The Gershonites bore the tent, the coverings and curtains. We need to ensure that our conduct corresponds to the Word of God. It is a question of the moral state of the Church.

The Merarites carried the boards, the pillars and the sockets. How important it is to maintain the principles that God has established in His Word for His Church and its gatherings!

The Kohathites carried the furnishings, which are types of the Person of the Lord. Let us honour Him in our hearts, maintaining His glory and beauty!

Let us leave nothing behind, but in all faithfulness carry on bearing the whole testimony of God’s house on earth!
