The Plight of Stray Dogs: A Call for Compassion

Back in those years, where I lived with my parents, there was one common issue that kept revisiting over again by landlords and those who owned pets like dogs, cats and goats. Some guys in the neighbourhood were fond of observing stray dogs or goats around the street and were always looking out to kill them or perhaps push them to moving cars or motorcycles so they could get hit and when they were knocked down, instead of pitying and taking care of them, they immediately surround such an animal to slaughter and share amongst themselves. Though it was always something fun to watch, it was a concern to me as I have this emotion of showing concern for animals that were treated unfairly.

I see animals that need to be taken care of especially dogs that are tagged as human friends. The story of my grandpa's dog made me fall in love with them and even with this interest shown, I can't have them around me as pets because they are expensive to take care of. Their foods aren't just ordinary meals but quality ones that will keep them healthy. But I do love and admire those who take care of dogs and cats like a part of the family and nurture them as kids.

My Grandfather's dog, being a local one was loved by him. The dog's responsibility was to go on errands which my grandpa would write the list of items to buy, wrapped in paper with a rope hung around its neck, and it would run across the road where such items are sold and would get them which the sellers would tie around its neck or most times on its back, and it will run back home.

There was a time when the dog went to the forest alone and killed a bush meat, being a heavy one and couldn't carry it, dug the ground and buried the meat while it ran home to call Grandpa. He went with the dog and saw the bush meat, he was excited because he trained a good dog. When it died by accident, he was sad and got depressed for weeks before he could forget about it, but the dog was loved by the family.

I have seen lots of stray dogs roaming around everywhere and looking so skinny, one would know they are suffering and lack good treatment. The worst of it all is that you will see their owners who aren't doing their job or taking these animals as their responsibility to care for them. These are people who end up killing these animals for food or some would be nice to sell them off to those who are ready to take care of them.

In some houses, some owners have built a cage for their dogs while some would host their cats indoors. Just like our goats in the village, they have their shelter, every morning, they go out to hunt food or go out to make friends and they return home late in the night since they are used to their homes. We give them food every morning, sometimes they eat yam peels, beans, maize shafts etc. Other times, Dad would go into the forest to pluck lots of leaves for the goats to eat and get filled. We take care of these goats every day so they don't go starving in a day.

When Grandma was alive, she made sure none of her goats starved as she treated them as part of the family. She believes that once we eat thrice daily as humans, the goats must not be starved too.

For cats, we don't own one. The belief that cats are easily used for witchcraft and could be used for diabolical purposes is something they hold onto around here. So, we never thought of having them as pets but I admire those, especially the foreigners who keep cats like family and are seen in homes. They believe in caring for animals as they are fun to be with.

Animals like dogs, cats etc should be given shelter and well taken care of instead of leaving them to wander or stray away to hunt food by themselves. When these animals are found wandering around the streets, they are easily monitored for selfish purposes by killing and eating them when they could bring them home and give them good treatment. So also, they get tortured by people around by throwing sticks and stones at them and in the process, get hurt and sick. I hate to see these animals getting sick and being left alone outside. Owners who aren't ready to care for these animals as pets could give them away or sell them to those who are willing to take care of them and provide shelter for them.

You see, countries like yours treat animals like family and nicely but not in my country. Although, there are a few places that takes care of them like the rich folks.

Your Grandfather's dog sounds like a very great dog.

I always wonder why people keep animals as pets if they are not willing to take care of them.

I love cats, they are smart, neat, and very friendly and I hope I can get one as pet someone

Yes, a great dog. I wished I knew the dog but I wasn't born then because I heard stories a lot.
Some people do not have the capacity to take care of these animals, just have them for a show in the neighbourhood.

Dogs can also be considered as the best friend of humans and dogs are very loyal to the owner. I also feel dogs are treated unfairly but there is nothing I can do. Taking care of a dog is not a matter of joke in a time of inflation.
In the case of cats, they are very cute, and lovely. One of my cousins has a cat and he used to play with it almost all day.

Hopefully things will get better for the homeless animals in your area 😢

Healthy dogs don't absolutely need a specialized diet, just a good balance of what you can provide. Definitely add some meat. Have you considered a small dog, that wouldn't eat very much?

Dogs can be interesting and helpful friends if and when they are trained well but I also shun the illicit and wicked killing of these animals simply for pleasure.

It's not worth it.

Yes, dogs can be sweet when you train them. They learn things faster and you will be surprised how they act and behave.

Dogs are tagged as human friends...I also understand the role it plays in security but personally, I do not like this animal After the bad experience with my late brother. This dog bite him and he died after three days. It was one of the most painful experiences since I was born. Till date, I hate to see this animal around me and can't even have it as a pet. I was going to bed when I saw this topic of yours, unfortunately I couldn't resist reading it. All hell to dogs ..I doubt I will like this animal even in my next world

Wow. Dog bite can be poisonous, sorry for bringing the memory up. I also had an experience with these big dogs too. One of them almost locked mouth with me. My clothes got torn on my chest. Thank God I wasn't bitten, just some scratches on my chest. Since then, I said I will never own any as a pet.

Your grandfather's dog is so intelligent, and that's only one of the fee traits a dog has, with proper training and love for a pet, they will give it back ten folds of what you've give. It's sad when other people just killed them for fun or jusy eat their meat. I really hate them, so much! Dogs has feelings too, and in fact they can love us more than some human. With yhem, you will never be betrayed.

Dogs have feelings too and should be treated fairly and good. They will always return good deeds done to them and that is how loving they are.

I really don't like it when people harm animals especially dogs. It's good to know that you and your family are animal lovers.

This post just brought back old memories of such occurrence in the same area where I grew up. Infact, my uncle's goat got stolen through similar pattern but this time, they poured salt inside the goat's mouth just to make her unable to bleat.

Yes. That is most wicked people's plot to steal a goat. Pouring salt into its mouth would prevent it from bleating.

Most of the dogs I see aren’t stray. They just have very irresponsible owners. These people just buy a dog for buying sake and forget that they are living things that feel too. It’s sad.

You are very right. That's from another angle. They do not care about these animals at all, leaving them to wander around the street and be a target for the wrong people.

Dogs also have feelings. They really do. I love it when people treat them rightly.

In my country, people just have dogs so they can bark for them. Only the rich ones give them the care they deserve.

Yes, they have feelings. Yes, some people own dogs just to keep barking and for security purpose alone which I do not dispute that but they should also take care of them.

I once helped a stray dog and I felt so fulfilled, maybe because I love dogs so much.

I enjoyed reading your post.

Popped in from Dreemport, always an awesome #dreemerforlife.

Yes. It's good if people can help stray dogs and make them feel better than thinking of harming them. Thank you 😊

You remind me of my father's dog many years ago. A vehicle hit the dog and ran away. Before my mum could go to the roadside to check the extent of the injury, some boys had stolen the dog. They went and eat it. It was so painful.

I am surprised at your grandpa's dog. I never knew that we have local dogs that can be trained to that extent. It's amazing.

Indeed, animals deserve good treatments. Instead of having one without caring for it, it's better not to have it.

Some guys are always on standby mode when animals like dogs are killed by moving vehicles or bikes and they won't even bother saving their lives because of their selfish interests. So painful.

Yes, I was also surprised at my Grandpa's dog and what it could do. Thanks for reading.
