Success ~ A journey and not a destination.

Growing up, I took my aunt as my role model who has succeeded in lots of things. As young as I was then, I realized what success means and what it entails. I saw how dedicated and focused she was on her work and life, and how things were falling into place for her. I learnt of her stories and what she went through to be who and what she is today. Still, she never stops seeking more knowledge and exploring new opportunities that come her way. That is success to me.

Success is a term that is difficult to define in today's world because, what we mean to be success to an individual can be different to another person. Success is interpreted by various individuals with the following factors; perspectives, cultural norms and personal values. In general, success is when one achieves their desired goals, aspirations and experiences a sense of achievement.

Most individuals view success as acquiring much material wealth and achieving abundant financial independence. To them, it is believed that those who accumulate and store up assets, own properties and get to that socioeconomic status in the society make them successful. This is mostly what society has implanted in the mind of people, that once they own all of these material wealth, they have reached the peak of success. In this regard, I beg to differ that attaining wealth and accumulating assets alone isn't the only requirement to success as it doesn't guarantee one's fulfilment and happiness.

In another sense, once an individual can experience personal growth and self-actualization, it means success to them. The truth here is that once an individual has found his or her passion, ambitions and keeps improving and learning, for sure, that is success.

When one can realize their potential, keeps pursuing their passions and attains a level of achievement when they keep learning, success is said to have been achieved. With success being defined in this way, such an individual would gain inner satisfaction, fulfilment and a sense of purpose in life. Success is achieving emotional well-being, developing intellectually and attaining spiritual fulfilment.

In another way, we can view success as when one has reached a higher milestone in their professional career and has advanced higher in their profession. Many individuals believe that once they have gained reasonable recognition in their field of career, once they have gotten the leadership they have worked their lives for and can overcome obstacles that show forth, they see it as success. Their perspectives on success are linked to great ambitions, the ability to scale through every challenge on the way to achieving success and their dedication towards making it a reality.

Success can also mean, for other people the act of achieving personal well-being, prioritising self-care, maintaining fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle. They have the notion that being successful entails taking care of oneself and giving the best personal treatment to oneself without limiting oneself or heeding to negativity. Once they have achieved this level of a healthy lifestyle, they are successful.

Lastly, other people viewed success as gaining connections with relationships with peers, colleagues and members of society. For someone who worked hard to have meaningful communication among others, and proffer solutions to problems in society, once these are achieved, they are already successful. The acts of kindness, generosity and contributing to meaningful and positive interactions in their communities are their yardstick for measuring what success should be like.

Do you now see that success is a multifaceted concept that means different things to each individual? This term is something that is dynamic and will keep evolving from person to person. Success does not only mean achieving external values but internal values such as personal growth, the pursuit of happiness and attaining levels of fulfilment. True success aligns with each person's personal values, aspirations, goals, ambitions and a sense of purpose.

Success is a journey and not a destination coupled with continuous learning, being able to adapt and discover oneself. Success is all about understanding that challenges and obstacles are part of life when one is on the way to discovering oneself while embracing them and finding fulfilment in the experiences of life.

Thanks for your time reading. Looking forward to your interaction.

You said it well. This term "success" means a whole lot of things to us differently.
While some people are very okay with the limit they've achieved, some others are pushing to touch the sky. That's how it is and none of these is seen as bad

Yes, as long as we are able to achieve what we have aimed at, we are successful. No crime in that. Thanks, Kingsley.

People say they are successful when they have attained a level of personal fulfilment, and this can be anything. It can be in line with the various definitions of success you have mentioned.

And when people reach a level of personal fulfilment, they seek a higher level, and the journey continues until death.
